monsieur r (br) wrote: Aged and wise plantation owner Colonel Gary Cooper and still youthful gunfighter Burt Lancaster make this one definately worth watching, but the plot is pretty standard stuff. Lancaster co-produced this one as well. Numerous supporting cast regulars include Caesar Romero, Spanish officer.... Ernest Borgnine and Charles Bronson appear occasionally as gunfighters following Cooper into Mexico. But this is really all Cooper and Lancaster's show and its great to see the veterans do their best to bring this sometimes sprawling Western to the screen. Most scenes aren't exceptional, but a few are on a grand scale with hundreds of extras, either soldiers or native Mexicans fighting for independance. The charge of the mission is reminicient of The Alamo on a smaller scale. Cooper and Lancaster portray Benjamin Trane and Joe Erin, two daredevil mercenaries who journey to Mexico in search of adventure and cold hard cash during the 1866 revolution. But they get more than they bargain for when the wealthy and beautiful Countess Duvarre (Denise Darcel) hires them to escort her (and a fortune in gold!) to Emperor Maximilian's fighting forces in Vera Cruz. The trail is fraught with danger, betrayal and murder...and when Ben is swept up in the revolutionaries' fervor, he and Joe find themselves at odds with the Mexican Army and each other. The final showdown between honorable and soft Cooper and selfish Lancaster comes suddenly, almost unexpectedly. The 3 million in gold causes more deaths and a climactic ending. Filmed entirely in Mexico, a cast of hundreds makes the film impressive at times, but in the end its all about Cooper and Lancaster. A conflict between man and man. Private U (it) wrote: Niven and Treacher are excellent, but Hollywood took liberties with the characterization of Jeeves. Not much of a plot, hence the 57 minute run time. Would like to have seen this duo perform a true Wodehouse story/script. Willie Best is out of place, but provides some great laughs.
