All the women have their issues in this one, like always, but only one of them fits in the limelight. (Samantha does her best to beat Carry to it, but in my opinion it was taken a bit too far, the outcome repetitive and somewhat offending, even when it was in character for Samantha). The movie starts strong - with another wedding! - but after that things get a little stale. That's the point, I suppose, since Carry is struggling in her marriage and it seems everyone needs a break. The trip to Abu Dhabi was a recurring theme from the previous film, yet it managed to bring some action into the slow "middle" of the story. Despite this, the movie feels drawn-out, then speeds towards the end in order to resolve the last of its issues.A thing to watch among "Sex and the City" fans, but I feel like they could have done better. (Like, there is no need to go abroad to make a story, but somehow that has become the theme with the movies. Maybe it is an active, conscious separation from the TV show that rarely left the streets of New York.)

Giving a synopsis of the plot is tricky because there are quite a few "shocking" developments throughout so I'll be brief. Basically the Earth has been decimated and only a few people are left alive. All of humanity lives within an isolated compound and you stay there until you are selected randomly to live in the last paradise on Earth, "The Island". Lincoln Six Echo (Ewan McGregor) and Jordan Two Delta (Scarlett Johansson) discover that something is not quite as it seems and attempt to escape. It might not be the first time you've seen this scenario play out, but I don't necessarily count that as a flaw if the film brings in some original material. How many romantic comedies, or horror movies, when you really think about it have a plot that revolutionary? I feel like the premises is legitimately interesting and thankfully the revelation about the titular island is pretty quick so you won't be waiting for the characters to catch up to the audience for too long. At first you get some decent thriller elements with our protagonist trying to figure out what's going on and finding a way to escape while showing off some of the darker elements of this world. Then we get some big action set pieces that are a lot of fun and use some pretty impressive special effects. A criticism that I have for "The Island" is that the action climax is towards the middle of the film, not the end. Then another misstep; it breaks up the rhythm of the movie when during the conclusion it chooses to go back to the action stuff instead of going back to logical tone, which would be the paranoid, dystopian future thriller story. The movie concludes with a typical action mano-y-mano fight that is pretty ridiculous and not that exciting either.Thankfully the movie doesn't have some of the incredibly bad comedic bits found in most of Michael Bay's other films and the naive protagonists have enough wits about them to stay mostly out the typical comedic "Fish out of Water" scenarios. It isn't a great movie but it's entertaining and there's more stuff that works than not. (On Dvd, May 18th, 2012).

(br) wrote: Tower Heist is a predictable abysmal movie of sub-par actors not being challenged and going through the strides just for that pay-check. Another Brett Ratner dud, this movie's premise is similar to many, the plot skips crucial scenes as shortcuts in an attempt to ensure easy fixes. The humour is forced and the dialogue is basic, making the whole movie a tedious struggle from beginning to end.

(it) wrote: I can't recommend this but it is very close. I felt the first half was excellent and then the wheels kind of fell off. There were many instances where I didn't know what was fantasy and what was reality which made it confusing. Interesting, yet confusing. The acting was great. The cast was pretty big as well. It was the story that jumped all over the place and and left a feeling of emptiness. A solid effort by Director Goldberg but he slightly missed the target. Only slightly though.
(gb) wrote: Not a terrible film at all but when so much is hinged on character, it has to be considered a failure because the characters in this are just not interesting or entertaining enough. And i really had problems with how it was shot, the black and white photography seemed like an after thought, as the uses of blacks was awful and a lot of the film seemed over exposed and flat, which did not seem like an intention.
