My family got this movie randomly in the mail years ago and I've watched it many times since. Michael Weatherred gives an amazing performance. Its actually very humorous, sometimes without trying to be and its got a great lesson! I'd recommend this to anybody who can find it! Its not an easy film to track down if you don't already have it. But it is well worth it to watch! In my eyes its the best family film ever! :)

But I have to say...I think does now.This is a really solid film, Western or not, carried almost entirely by Jimmy Stewart- the rest of the acting in this movie was basically nonexistent or sub par, other than the role of 'Boy' (yes, that was his name in the credits), who I thought did a fine job, too. What was really appealing to me was the situation this family found themselves in during such a difficult time in history. It's one of those films that presents you with a situation and almost asks you what you would do- and I honestly have no idea. It centers around a family living in Confederate Virginia during the Civil War who doesn't support the cause of the Confederacy (and are called cowards for not fighting), but are simultaneously being attacked by the North for the sole fact that they live where they live. 'Shenandoah' is very tragic and difficult movie that somehow manages to be uplifting at the same time. As a Western and as a film in general, I definitely recommend it. Oh, and this is my first glimpse of angry, gun-toting Jimmy Stewart. Me like.

His usual themes of alienation, the failure of communication- especially across people who do not speak the same language but through circumstance are compelled to work together- and the role of the individual in times of state crisis are wonderfully worked through. Forget the "dodgy" camera work (it was made in 1946 and Rossellini had to steal the stock and camera/s) and use of unprofessional actors, it's all about how we speak of the world we live in. Much more than neo realism and demonstrates what a long way he had come in the brief time since Roma, Citta Aperta. The images of Partisans crucified in the Po Valley by fascists will always linger.

I love the poetic shot of the rain falling on the window at the end, and I can't help but feel it should've stopped there instead of cutting to the police car on the road (along with the reprise of the annoying main theme). I also liked how the movie never really answered all the questions it presented. In a way it's frustrating, but it helps put the viewer in the same state of confusion that the protagonist is in. It also made great use of silence, which is especially effective during the scene where the killer toys with Cathy (arguably one of the best scenes of its kind). Personally I think this is essential viewing for anyone aspiring to make their own horror film.

Rose gets his big break with a washed up Italian lounge singer, Nick Apollo Forte, but gets sucked into the singer's personal drama involving his mistress played by Mia Farrow, who plays a very out-of-character type of role as a brassy broad, but does it well. The film is shot in black and white by the great Gordon Willis and the story told in flashbacks by a group of agents sitting in a deli swapping stories about Broadway Danny Rose, with Sandy Baron narrating the main story. I think my main complaint is the film's absurd Felliniesque moments seem out of place with the film's dramatic elements. They would have worked if the film was a straight comedy, but costumed superheroes showing up in the middle of a field or women in bird costumes, seem out of place if we were to take the drama seriously. Still, getting to see Allen do stand-up in a Catskills or the bits involving stuttering ventriloquist are just pure cinema magic. It's a flawed film, but it's also kind of magic.
