I tried to give this movie a chance anyway, but at the end I still was disappointed. The creepy scenes aren't very creepy. The story doesn't make sense sometimes (one scene she hates him, next scene she loves him..) and as mentioned the story is just too predictable to entertain. I watched it till the end because I hoped it would get better or more thrilling at the end, but that wasn't the case. You shouldn't watch this movie if you are not a big fan of this type of films, and even if you are, you probably won't get too excited.

If you are willing to overlook the gaping logical loopholes and the Muslim clichs (as director of "My Name Is Khan", "Kurbaan" producer Karan Johar should have known better), you'll be well-entertained.

Greg B (ag) wrote: "Effie Gray" is a character study on sexual repression in Victorian-era England. Dakota Fanning (doing fine work) portrays Effie Gray, an uppity Scottish girl whose family is in financial ruin and chooses to marry into the higher social circles so her family can see financial security. Studying family law in my paralegal program, I can see how hard it was for English women to get an annulment. Gray finds out that living in the higher social circles is not all it's cracked up to be. For lack of a better word, her suitor does not engage in relations with her necessary to sustain a relationship. She is miserable in life and simply going through the motions, and the highly nihilistic narrative encapsulates this idea. As a period piece goes, the film was authentic in everything from the speech and the architecture to the mannerisms. The film was definitely watchable and paints a less than ideal picture of the status of women in the Victorian era. Harkening back to family law, most states use a no-fault divorce approach, so Gray would have simply needed to cite irreconcilable marriages to get her divorce. It was nearly impossible for English women to dissolve their marriages even if they were happy, and many didn't want to for social and financial reasons. I found the ending unsatisfying and bleak. I don't think the film ties all its loose ends together well, and, frankly, the movie is very dark. I felt it good of been a great film with less of a slipshod execution ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B-
