James W (kr) wrote: Tonight I've been watching Aldo Lado's wonderful giallo titled Short Night of Glass Dolls. It opens with someones body being found, only this person isn't quite dead their brain still works. This man being our main character Gregory Moore (Jean Sorel...you might know him from Lizard in a Woman's Skin...but thats for another night), who is a reporter. Aren't they all.We follow his journey in the ambulance all the way to the local morgue. There he is closed away for a while, so to pass the time he starts to think about how is beautiful girlfriend mysteriously disappeared. Her named being Mira (played by Barbara Bach of The Spy Who Loved Me). We are then introduced to Jessica (Ingrid Thulin), who is also a reporter and starts to work with Gregory. Back into the future; as most of the story is told though Greg's mind, we meet another of Gregory's friends Ivan. He is a morgue worker who notices that rigormortis hasn't set in on Greg's body, so he goes about trying to revive him. So Greg and Jessica go round asking everyone who attended a party questions about his missing girlfriend. As Gregory starts to unravel new clues, the plot becomes even more obscure. These clues eventually lead him to a club...this is where the twist occurs. As I do not believe in spoiling films for people I will not tell you the twist or the ending. All I will say is. You won't believe your eyes! This is a giallo with a difference, it's missing those savage and bloody deaths that we are so used to from this genre. Lado's camera work is smooth, with some fantasic shots. Also as a giallo is quite slow paced but I from my interpritation this is all about learning and that we are leaning at the pace Gregory is remembering. Lado's has picked some stunning locations to shoot this film at, some really have to be seen to be believed.Ennio Morricone soundtrack is beautiful and really reflects upon the images we see. It is also truly terrifying and keeps you tense. This reflects upon the pace of the film, as the pace of the music slowly begins to increse the tension in the film.
