Soni K (jp) wrote: *** This review may contain spoilers ***GravyTrain is a retro (think 70's) style indie Canadian comedy by the same twosome, April Mullen and Tim Doiron, who made the other indie gem Rock, Paper, Scissors: The Way of the Tosser. The film centers around Gypsy Creeks #1 cop Charles "Chuck" GravyTrain (played by Doiron) and his new partner Ms. Uma Booma (played by Mullen), as they go on the hunt in and around Gypsy Creek, for the elusive Jimmy Fish Eyes, who had killed Chuck's father several years before. Of course several obstacles seem to get in the way of catching the elusive killer, including the fact that many of the potential leads, themselves end up victims of The Fish, begging the question "Where's the Fish?" (or even moreso "Who IS the Fish?")The film also had a beautiful aesthetic about it, both in sound and cinematography. Beginning with its look in the way in which it was shot (using Red One camera technology) amplifying, the sharp detail of, for example, the black and white in the opening sequence, to the funky, grainy retro feel of the soft pastel colours in the clothing and decor, to the kaleidoscopic FX in Chuck's psychedelic dream trip.GravyTrain was alive with beautifully contrasting visuals, the essence of which was not lost on this amateur photographer. And the selection of groovy tunes from the day helped to compliment the overall "I'm there baby" feel.Personally, I found GravyTrain, to be a hoot!A slapstick, tongue-in-cheek comedy, which, much like the actors there in, doesn't take itself too seriously. Some parts had me laughing hard, even to tears with the unexpected one liners and outlandish scenes. And, is it just me, or is there still "a mystery" surrounding the "shadowy figure" in the shadows at the Devil's Pitch Fork bar? We never did find out who he is/was! I can surely see this having a sequel or more in the genre.I loved the original, trippy, campy, silly nature of GravyTrain, tied together by the plot and whodunit mystery, which kept me guessing right until the "big catch".

Aaron A (br) wrote: I was apprehensive about watching this as I didn't enjoy Rocky 4 and this film has poor reviews. I was surprised though as I didn't feel this film was too bad and I actually preferred it to Rocky 4. Rocky V sees the loveable fighter down on his luck, having lost everything and now back in his old neighbourhood. This is more like a sentimental melodrama than a hard hitting action film but for me it has it's moments.I like some moments of the film and I take my hat off to Stallone and Co. for trying something different as the previous films had a similar storyline. Yes, the acting is clunky and awkward at times. In fact, as harsh as it sounds, it's almost amateurish now and then. Also, let's make no mistake, the fight at the end let's the film down. It's silly, undignified and unnecessarily over the top. So, at this point the franchise is like Rocky himself, down and out, but there is still a little bit of greatness in there.

Kevin N (fr) wrote: This is a good story made very enjoyable by its cast, a bunch that knows how to balance the pathos and the comedy just right. Fred MacMurray is just right for the character of John Sargent, stern and stoic with his own brand of charisma, but it is Barbara Stanwyck who really shines here. She turns in a powerful performance, the kind that starts low key but sneaks up and jumps you, and consequently she makes the character refreshingly three-dimensional. The script, which was written by the great Preston Sturges, is good if implausible, and though it's far from a holiday classic is stands as a cute and nostalgic look at the importance of family and the power of love.
Dave A (gb) wrote: The original Universal werewolf movie makes interesting viewing looking back after the werewolf formula is now so well established. This movie can be viewed as a prototype. You can see the basic element of the werewolf being a tragic figure rather than pure evil, for example. Most of the rest of the mythology, though, is not carried over into later movies so you could think of the Lon Chaney Jr. Werewolf as actually being a reboot to use our modern terms. As a 1930's monster movie, it's better than average. The supporting cast is fun though the lead is just OK. It was quite disappointing that we never get to see a match between the feral forms of Yogami and Glendon. The movie really feels like that should have been the climax.Overall, it's an entertaining and historically interesting movie.

Jeanine O (nl) wrote: This movie doesn't even deserve half a star. I should have known with Jennifer F***ing Aniston in it that it would be an utter disgrace. It's slow, the plot is bizarre as f*** without any reason to be, and the character reactions are not genuine or true to real life. I told my husband I'm going to burn the disc rather than donate it so that's one less person who would ever happen upon this garbage.
