Rat Race

In an ensemble film about easy money, greed, manipulation and bad driving, a Las Vegas casino tycoon entertains his wealthiest high rollers -- a group that will bet on anything -- by pitting six ordinary people against each other in a wild dash for $2 million jammed into a locker hundreds of miles away. The tycoon and his wealthy friends monitor each racer's every move to keep track of their favorites. The only rule in this race is that there are no rules.

Harry W (br) wrote: Kicking & Screaming is an awfully misguided movie. While I enjoyed it as a kid, today I saw it as a terrible family comedy with indifferent direction from Jesse Dylan which somehow resulted in a terribly cheap and ineffective comedy costing $77 million. Believe me, watching this will cause you to wonder just who the hell wasted $77 million on this, because unless it went into the paychecks of Will Ferrell, Robert Duvall and The Black Eyed Peas for the rights to their song "Let's Get It Started, wherever this money went sounds suspiciously like a case of overstating the budget as a means of tax aversion. The script is weak in Kicking & Screaming, mostly because it makes Will Ferrell tone down his comedic abilities and then has him do nothing with them. He just gets forced through a generic and awful character, and even at moments where he could use his energy strongly he is at the weakest in the film. No matter what comedic talents you would hope to find in Will Ferrell, they are not in this PG rated disaster of a film which lacks the heart of a sports film or the essence of a comedy, failing in both areas.Mike Ditka is the only really funny presence at all. Even though as an Australian I don't follow NFL, he's the only bright spot in a Will Ferrell movie which is a phrase I never thought I would say. The script is just that terrible. And the cinematography and soundtrack is good. Plus, Kicking & Screaming also features a young Josh Hutcherson which is good for any fan of his.But any fan of anybody else in this film, aside from Will Ferrell fans that can tolerate the lowest of comedies. One of the most severe problems is that Will Ferrell has no good actors to initiate a chemistry with. Usually he's teamed up with a comedic great like John C. Reilly, Steve Carrell or Danny McBride. But in Kicking & Screaming he has nothing and nobody. All he's stuck with is Robert Duvall who similarly is forced through a terrible character and is even less deserving as he is deemed one of the best actors of his generation, and the lack of talent provided by Kate Walsh. Will Ferrell has nobody to create a strong comedic chemistry with or to write a script that will let his comedic talents flourish, so he doesn't bring any laughs. The others do even less.So riding a terrible script, poor direction and a weak and predictable story, Kicking & Screaming is a terribly paced and unfunny comedy which will most likely entertain the kids but not the more aged.
