Reap the Wild Wind
Clipper ships taking the shortest route between the Mississippi and the Atlantic often end up on the shoals of Key West in the 1840s. Salvaging the ships' cargos has become a lucrative business for two companies -- one headed by a feisty young woman. Then she falls in love with the captain of a wrecked ship while he recuperates at her home. She travels to Charleston and is charming to the man most likely to be head of the captain's company, thinking she will be able to get the captain the position he wants on the company's first steam ship.

(au) wrote: There is a fine line between campy and cheesy, so I was a bit skeptical about this movie. they managed to pull it off though. this was quite funny and even charming at times. behind the lines there was a nice dig at corporations and the love of guns too. this town gives up all their freedoms to some big business for the promise of safety, and this safety is ensured largely by virtually EVERYONE owning weapons. but in the end of course NEITHER can keep the town totally safe. another good point in this movie is how often such totalitarian societies succeed also by discouraging and punishing anyone who doesn't fit in who doesn't simply keep their mouth shut and do what they are told. but there is also an argument to be made that if the family in the movie HAD followed the rules, the tragedies that follow would never have happened. maybe they WOULD have been safer. at what cost though?

(ca) wrote: Last night I had to sit through one of the most boring movies I have ever seen. In one of my classes I had to watch the film Little Buddha and let me tell you it was pretty brutal. The film is about the origin story of Buddha. While telling the origin story of Buddha the movie follows around a little boy who people believe could be the reincarnated form of Buddha. I don't have much to say about this film but here are a couple things I really didn't like: 1. Boring. 2. It is hard to find decent child actors. 3. Keanu Reeves was NOT made to play Buddha. I wouldn't really recommend this film to anyone. If I had to pick an intended audience it would be for people who are looking to be very bored. The film felt more like one of those educational videos that you would watch in elementary school. So, unless you want to learn more about Buddhism in a boring way, stay clear of Little Buddha. (jp) wrote: If you like the history of comedy this is a must see. I never read this as a kid but the documentary is interesting with all the comedic genius that came through National Lampoon and the characters that worked as writers and others behind the scenes. Paced well and doesn't drag like a lot of docs tend to do.
