Michael H (de) wrote: Rehashes furry horror stereotypes well-covered by Universal in the 1940s while alternating between emo Twilight-esque melodrama and an Expendables team of monster hunters which is completely expendable.

There was as an Asian holocaust at the hands of Imperial Japan that is not as known or understood my many young people today. Revisionist history argues that we brought the Pearl Harbor attacks on ourselves by backing Japan into a corner. Learn why is it Japan was backed into a corner, and the state of mind their leaders and military were in.

Rivette has a naturalistic style with very little fuss... most of the fussiness is left to the dialogue. I felt the script was the weakest aspect of the film, with everyone talking in such an introspective, abstract manner as if they spent every waking moment pondering the human condition. Otherwise, I was more engaged than I expected to be. You could say this doesn't need to be 4 hours long, but I found the length didn't bother me much. I can't think of anything that was particularly superfluous. While I certainly wouldn't call the film a masterpiece (and I think it wouldn't get as much attention if it wasn't so lengthy) it was pretty intriguing.

Paul D (ag) wrote: Still one of the greatest films I have seen, a masterpiece of story, acting, dialogue, scenery and staging, it is as powerful today as when I first saw it. In an odd way our distance in time from the Vietnam war makes me appreciate the story and the movie even more as works of art.

Je M (mx) wrote: The thin plot renders this more of a character study than a bona fide thriller, but Fonda plays her immensely challenging role to Oscar-winning perfection. Decent early Pakula with Gordon Willis giving us a glimpse of his seemingly limitless ability as a cinematographer, but the screenplay lacks the taut dynamism of Pakula's best work.
