Streep is particularly stunning, virtually unrecognizable behind bloodshot eyes and a haze of alcoholism. Plot-wise, the film doesn't go off on that many tangents, so that it threatens to become listless. Thankfully though, the performances and a gorgeously bleak look at Depression-era squalor keep you glued to the screen.
