Jim S (es) wrote: Overwrought and over acted (especially Damian Lewis, who really chews up the scenery), The cast does their best with what they have here, but you just expect so much better from director Kasdan. It's over long and very confusing and really isn't that scary, considering the Stephen King source. The visual effects aren't that bad and it does have its moments of gore. Meh...

Joshua L (nl) wrote: The film is full of bad moments. You can kind of guess what the scenes were supposed to look like in the mind of the writer but they just turn out so crappy it's actually funny.

Justin A (nl) wrote: So let's try this again and hope my review doesn't magically disappear. So yeah, this movie is trash. Let's get one thing straight right away, there are only two reasons someone would be going back to watch this movie: Patty Mullen and Kristin Davis. This isn't a movie that is remembered fondly for pushing the boundaries or for great special effects. This movie is remembered as the other movie Patty Mullen made besides Frankenhooker, and as the film debut for future Sex and the City star Kristin Davis. If you've heard of this movie otherwise, it was likely by chance or you're really scrapping the bottom of the barrel for bad movies. This movie is cheap. How cheap? So cheap they shot the entire thing in eight days all during the daytime. Yes, an entire horror movie that takes place all during the day. I have no idea if they couldn't afford lighting or if it would have been too difficult to get lighting at a place that had no electricity. You'll also notice how terrible the special effects are. There are moments you can see the edges of the prosthetics, as well as one very obvious moment where the tubing for blood effects is clearly visible in a close-up shot. I have no idea how they did not notice that. And let's not even get started on that acting... Okay, actually, let's mention the acting. It's horrendous. I won't give too much blame to the actors because most of them didn't go on to big things so I'm unsure if some of them were even actors or just friends of the crew. What became painfully obvious to me right away was the lack of preparation or professionalism on set. The dialogue is so bad that it seemed there were no rewrites and the cast had very little to no time to prepare themselves with the script. Then the acting is so tongue-in-cheek, wink at the camera, "hey we're having a lot of fun shooting this terrible low budget horror movie" that it's hard to get the feeling anyone took this thing serious. Then there's Patty Mullen and Kristin Davis. These two are HOT. This is them when they were in their early twenties, just starting out in movies, and just doing whatever work they could to get noticed. I would say about 30% of the movie is them walking around in swimsuits. To be honest, that wasn't enough. This movie doesn't even break 80 minutes (which is always the first sign to me that a feature length movie probably won't be that good) and yet it somehow finds ways to drag at times. The movie is mostly boring when neither of the two are on screen. In the filmmakers' defense, there's no way they could no Kristin Davis would become as semi popular as she did, but my counter argument to that is SHE WAS HOT AS HELL. Seriously, the entire movie could have been her and Patty Mullen walking around and ad libbing and I wouldn't have been nearly as bored as I was when the "not quite Freddy Krueger" killer spat out one liners. At the very least we could have gotten a nude scene from them. Apparently, the filmmakers gave Ruth Collins an extra hundred dollars to flash the camera, but why didn't they do that for Patty Mullen or Kristin Davis? Sure it's sleazy, but at least it would have gave your movie some notoriety and possible cult status. It's not like they haven't done nude scenes before. Hell, Patty Mullen was a Penthouse Pet and she spends most of this movie wearing a jacket. I don't know the details behind the making of this movie, and I'm sure there had to be discussions, but it's just shocking to me that the two of them didn't do anything memorable. The only thing memorable was Kristin Davis' hips and butt. Well, that and how shockingly revealing her one-piece ALMOST is. Point is, Patty Mullen and Kristin Davis do not strike me as unwilling or incapable actors. Their talent and good looks should have been noticed from the very start. Especially since this movie isn't supposed to take itself serious. Look at Frankenhooker and Davis' body of work on television shows like Seinfeld and Sex and the City. The two clearly have the ability to do some campy comedy stuff and this was them when they were young and beautiful. It's bothersome not because I desperately wanted it in the movie, it's bothersome because it was wasted potential with young talent. That's why I think this movie bugged me so much. Great location, great talent, and still completely missed the mark. With all that said, I won't completely bash the movie. It's not the worst thing in the world. At least it is fun at times and is watchable. This is a so-bad-it's-good movie. This is Hobgoblins territory. This movie could have easily been fodder for MST3K. However, don't expect some sort of bad movie in the vein of Chopping Mall or C.H.U.D. This isn't a bad movie because it's goofy. This is a bad movie because it was terribly made. Still, I'd recommend it to those looking for trash.

A perfect transition from having it all to having nothing and a dramatic descent into madness. Absolutely worthy of her Academy Award for Best Actress!! As well as Sally Hawkins's nomination :)
