Rise of the Damned

Rise of the Damned

Six years after a violent car crash claimed her parent's lives, Jesse is still trying to put her life back together. The situation is complicated by the fact that her parents virtually vanished, as did the accident wreckage, so there's no evidence for the police and certainly no closure for her. Jesse meets her fears head-on when she and a group of filmmakers break into an abandoned mental institution, she immediately experiences a visceral deja-vu. The asylum seems somehow connected to her missing parents and furthermore, the building is far from deserted. The group discovers that a sinister doctor has taken up residence in the building's vast underground and he is using extreme science trying to bring his wife back from the dead! The basement also contains the countless remains of the doctor's failed experiments, all of which are now slowly coming back to life when they make contact with a murky substance that has begun to leak out of several holding tanks!

Talitha B (ca) wrote: Not bad, not bad, but definitely overestimated. Glad to see there are still movies without a happy ending.

Aneesh K (it) wrote: Its more than worst. Hardly scary.

Eric R (de) wrote: Amazing atmosphere and lighting make this film watchable. The long slow tracking shots were breathtaking. On repeat viewings I have come to appreciate this film much more. Tarr definetly has better work, and but this is still a great film

Zachary M (gb) wrote: I don't think there has ever been a movie that is remembered for two such bizarre things; a brutal rape scene and a scene involving dueling banjos. But it does have a pretty unique and interesting concept behind it that often gets over looked: what if something bad happens to you, you take a brutal revenge, but the person you direct your furry at may not be the person who wronged you? And because of the violent rape scene this aspect is almost always overlooked now a days. And that is a shame, because the base idea itself is an interesting one and is worth a much more in-depth look at, maybe in a different movie.

The Critic (fr) wrote: Notable for the more steady alliance between black and white characters than others in the genre, 'Blacula' is one of the more known and discussed entries from the blaxploitation era. Overall, the film is a bit of a mixed bag. There's lots of fun to be had here, especially in way of horror and action sequences (the pyrotechnics are excellent), but the story doesn't always maintain momentum. William Marshall is strong in the titular role, though Vonetta McGee is less competent as the object of his desire; the pair also lack chemistry to give their blossoming romance bite, so to speak. The production is redeemed by an excellent title sequence and stunning soundtrack. It was the first picture to receive the Best Horror Film nod at the Saturn Awards and was followed by 'Scream Blacula Scream' in 1973.

Gina C (es) wrote: I can be a bit campy, but I love Peter O'Toole. And there aren't very many romantic/comedy ghost stories out there. So I still watch it every October. ;)

Mark S (nl) wrote: Was hoping this would be a hidden gem but there's a reason it's not well known - it's overly saccharine, pretty dull and seems to rely on Welsh people saying swear words for most of its laughs.

Brandon W (fr) wrote: When coming across the video game adaptations, they aren't usually good and can downright be disrespectful to the video game itself. With Resident Evil, as a game, it didn't represent the game very well, but as an action film, it can be a bit fun to watch. The movie does have a bit of the horror aspect of the game, but it was all in jump scares and false scares that didn't get me scared at all. The plot is not that bad for a video game adaptation, but as a regular movie, it's very formulaic and predictable to watch. The effects are good for the most part, and the production designs are really nice to look at. The characters are so forgettable, that even when some of them died, you can't even remember about what their name is. The acting is eh, but Milla Jovovich is a really good lead actress in it and I sort of care about her surviving, which is definitely more then I can say with all of the people who are trying to survive. The action scenes are exciting to watch, and the writing isn't really that bad, although the humor that Paul W.S. Anderson wrote in are flat. So while this isn't the worst video game adaptation that I've seen, but it was just mediocre and just average, although as an action film, I guess it's a bit of a guilty pleasure to me.

Alec B (it) wrote: There's a lot of offbeat and weird jokes (some land, some don't) but the problem is that the movie takes the plot too seriously and ends up playing like a spoof that isn't actually spoofing anything.

Stuart R (de) wrote: I'm a fan of Solondz but this is his weakest work. None of the random stories ever really get your attention and although I love his visual style, it just feels like he's in 2nd gear
