(us) wrote: This is a fantastic MOVIE! I can't say enough good things about it, however I had to watch it twice to get the full impact behind what was really going on. The boys family is trying to park their motor home near a cliff when it suddenly cascades over the cliff and crashes below. The little boy saw what happened and finally finds his way to the wreckage. It is heart wrenching because he is all alone in the wilderness. Holden obviously saw or heard what happened and knows the boy is "totally traumatized" to the extent that he is not even coherant. The old man communicates with the boy and leads him through the wilderness and ultimately befriends him (in a manly and distant manner) by banging two rocks together and non-verbally directs the boy in following him. I don't know who came up with the name for this movie because there is no rational in my mind for naming it "THE EARTHLING." I am a female and remember that 1980 was during the initial stages of the "feminist movement," and I can see where a feminist would perhaps believe that the Holden should have sweetly nurtured the boy back to reality. Having watched the movie many times and it being an all time favorite for me, I continue to be deeply touched by the poignant and deeply moving way in which Holden befriended and endeared the boy to himself without allowing become a crutch that would make the boy dependent upon him. Exceptional Movie!

(nl) wrote: I love John Ford and the The Quiet Man might very well be my favourite movie but this flick is plain and simple a horrible, dull and very racists piece of crap. Claudette Colbert makes for a cute lead with Bambi eyes but her role is very one-dimensional and limited to the faithful wife of the American Soldier. Henry Fonda is colourless and bland. What upsets me the most is the ridiculous portrayl of the First Nations and black people, they are either ravaging monsters and blabbering idiots. To make things worse, at the very end of the movie, to the sound of the national anthem everybody pledges allegiance to the flag, including the idiot Indian and servant black woman !Of course, this being John Ford's first colour film, there are some lovely scenes of great cinematic beauty to be seen in this movie (inspired by Gone with the Wind it seems) but that does not excuse the lack of story and the blatant racism.Utter Rubbish.
