Robert. A Fortunate Life
Aleksander Sokurov brings the treasures of the Hermitage back into the light by making films about artists and their paintings. He has chosen the painter Hubert Robert, who spent a long time in Italy, and whose preference was for creating ancient ruined landscapes and naturalistic portrayals of times past. He was successful with the wealthy, who bought his works from him. The camera pans across the paintings while Sokurov speaks of a happy era, when the artist was at one with the spirit of the times, and agreed with the taste of his clients. Just how far removed from us this is, is shown by pictures of a "Nô" performance which are inter-cut on the screen. No words are necessary to describe what everybody knows today.

(us) wrote: Its good for offering some explanation on what became of the characters since the first film and for pleasing children, but seems content on marring a good story with a puny running time, half of which is occupied by songs that don't even try to contribute to the story.
(nl) wrote: One world to describe this movie is awkward. Another is funny. BUT the fact that it is very very awkward makes the funny parts go right out the window. Like the name implies this is about 3 very good friends, 2 guys and a girl. Like the name also implies you can probably imagine what happens at some point in the movie. The first half is a great story about 3 friends and then it gets weird. So, if you can enjoy the first part and try and ignore the 2nd half you will enjoy this movie.

(fr) wrote: Campbell Scott gives, easily, his finest performance as the eccentric playboy who has a reputation for picking up any woman he desires. With an illicit affair with his boss on the rocks, he turns up jealous and heartbroken. His good-natured, sweet and untarnished nephew comes into the picture wanting his seedy uncle to help him lose his virginity. With Scott's poor attitude towards the opposite sex and his seek-and-destroy method of taming an easy woman, the nephew is on the road to ruin the goodness that is within him. Scott is excellent and unflinching. You can almost see his lack of heart in his deadpan delivery.
