After Rocky goes the distance with champ Apollo Creed, both try to put the fight behind them and move on. His performance was way beyond what he has done in the past and one of the best acting jobs that I have EVER seen! The plot is ok and at times it drags a bit. But overall this turned out to be a decent flick. Give Jake Gyllinunall an oscar that he deserves!

(es) wrote: Mostly Martha was released in 2001 and has a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but like any foreign film that's critically acclaimed, what do they do? They dumb it down with an American remake, because too many English-language speakers are so up themselves that they "don't want to read subtitles." Ugh. Like many foreign films that have been remade for an American audience, the original is obviously better than the remake. That said, there are still faults with this version, but I'll get to that later. First, the positives. First of all, the casting is better in the German version. As much as Catherine Zeta-Jones tries, Martina Gedeck is perfectly cast as Martha who is neurotic, hard to get along with and really anti-social. Most of her best scenes involve no dialogue, but we can still feel her pain because Gedeck is such a brilliant actress. I'm not saying that Catherine Zeta-Jones can't act, I'm just saying that Gedeck does a way better job because her character becomes a lot more likeable and she's way more memorable than Kate in the American version. I also liked Mario better in this version because he was way less of a stereotypical Gary-Stu than Eckhart's version. Once again, Eckhart is a good actor, but he's in the same situation that Kristen Stewart is in once it comes to Twilight. Both actors try their hardest, but they can't help the fact that they're playing really bland characters. Probably the best difference between the two versions that there's no pointless conflict that focuses on the love interests. For me, one of the most irritating things in rom-coms is having to put up with the inevitable conflict, which does nothing but slow things down. As the Nostalgia Critic pointed out, we already know they're going to get together in the end, so why the conflict? In Mostly Martha, the conflict is between Martha and her niece who has to go to Italy. In No Reservations, it's predictably between Kate and her boyfriend. In general, the writing in this version is a lot smarter than the American version. They know they're working with a predictable premise, so they try their hardest to steer away from it through good acting, interesting characters and brilliant cinematography. In the remake, they try to hide the predictable premise by glossing it up with lame montages and nice music, which (like the stupid conflict) only slows things down. So now that we've gotten the positives out of the way, here are the faults. First of all, I felt that the pace of this film was really slow to the point that it became unpleasant at times. They are dealing with a really serious subject matter, which is understandable, but that also gives the writer an opportunity to not make it too boring. In this film, they didn't and as a result, many parts were boring, gloomy and just unpleasant. The second problem is with the casting of Lina, played by Maxime Foerste. I know that her character has been through a lot of things that she's too young to deal with, but she's really unlikeable. The strange thing is that Abigail Breslin is actually better as the little girl and you think it would be the other way around since No Reservations is the inferior film. Breslin just brings more character to the role and she stands out a lot more. And now for the biggest fault in Mostly Martha: the music. Good god! If it weren't for the music which sounded like nails on a chalkboard, I would've given the movie an extra star. From the very beginning of the movie when we see the montage of the food in the restaurant, my ears are bleeding. For some reason, the anti-Christ who was behind the music in this film chose to use an annoying saxophone as the lead instrument for the melodies in the score, which reminded me of the musical Hitler also known as Kenny G. They were trying to make it sound like the jazz music that would play in a sophisticated restaurant, but in reality this is what all jazz music must sound like to people who hate jazz music. The music is another thing that was shockingly better in the remake. No Reservations may have had its faults, but at least it had a decent soundtrack. Music may sound like something that isn't really important in the quality of a film, but think about it. If they had used the Sesame Street theme music in the shower scene in Psycho, would it have had the same impact? Like cinematography and directing, music builds up atmosphere. The atmosphere the music bulit up was thoroughly awful. It brought back horrible memories of being stuck in furniture stores that play nothing but Kenny G. With the faults aside though, there's not much else to say about Mostly Martha. It's just better than No Reservations and is living proof of the sad fact that if there's a great foreign film, English language speakers are so arrogant that they can't deal with a good story in another language. Hollywood, will you ever learn?

I didn't consider this a happy ending. Too many characters I wanted to see live didn't make it. When I saw who made it to the end, my reaction was "Really? That's it?" But, at least Riddick gets his final revenge on those nasty ravenous aliens.Another reviewer mentioned being disappointed that Claudia Black died so soon. Agreed.

It reminds me about James Bond movies due to connections with Anya. I think that it would be more interesting if it happened in Summer instead of winter. Everything is explained in good time but I found myself torn a bit about the ending. Not sure if framing villains is the way to get rid of them; even if the Villains lie when they are nabbed. On another note, watching Billy the Kid Returns inspired me to research Roy Rogers a bit. In all these films I've watched he just seems like such a great guy. Love his demeanor, the music and the humorous characters. The late 30s, early 40s films seem so much fun. And I must admit, Rogers was a handsome and obviously talented guy. These films are all class, and though this one suffers from extremely dumb villains, it's included in that global rating.
