SV G (ru) wrote: A fair docudrama on the career of Gertrude Berg, who was star of The Goldbergs radio show and later TV series. She not only starred in but wrote all of the scripts from radio days onto TV days and set the way for the family situation comedies we would come to know after like I Love Lucy and Dick Van Dyke, etc...Gertrude paved the way. Interviews with those that worked with her as well as family members and others in the entertainment industry. If you can remember those days or have an interesti in radio or tv history, you will likely enjoy this.

Evan M (kr) wrote: True horror. And chilling to the bone. Shot here locally and one of the first to be shot digitally. I love everything about this movie, especially Peter Mullan's moving performance. Multiple viewings may be required. And if the premise wasn't enough to freak you out, then please note it was shot in the old Danvers State Mental Hospital in Danvers, Massachusetts. Most of the props are real. GOOSIES!!!

peter h (kr) wrote: Roger Corman's/ Ron Howard's GRAND THEFT AUTO (1977): By the late 1970's directors like Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese had become Hollywood legends after their humble directorial debuts with the legendry Roger Corman. Now it was Ron Howard's turn to start of his directing career with Corman, now prior to Howard's directorial debut in this Corman car chase flick. Ron Howard was a household name thanks to his role as Richie on the beloved T.V sitcom Happy Days. After working for Corman on EAT MY DUST, Howard immediately signed up for the next project were he would star, direct and co-write the film with his dad. The movie its self is just a simple car chase film with explosions, car wrecks and the good old hero vs. Villains. The plot of the film involves a young couple called Sam (Ron Howard) and Paula who want to get married but Paula's rich father will not allow them to walk up the isle. So the two take Paula's fathers gold and black Rolls Royce to Las Vegas to get hitched , but Paula's parents , Paula's ex- boyfriend and his parents, private detectives, the mob , a bunch of red necks , a money hungry preacher, and one annoying DJ stand in their way. The result, one full on car chase film with nothing but bunches of car wrecks and car chases. For a directorial debut, it's not that impressive but at least Roger Corman gave Ron Howard his very first directorial job. One cheesy mess of a 70's car chase film with high levels of entertainment along with Roger Corman's DEATH RACE 2000. 6/10

kelly (it) wrote: Had this pre-dated Bonnie and Clyde, it would be hailed as a classic and taught in film schools everywhere. As it is, it is a very entertaining exploitation flick from Roger Corman, featuring Shelley Winters in the lead role. I personally prefer it to Bonnie and Clyde, as this odd family is far more complicated and just as socially radical. The dialogue feels very authentic, and the characters suffer just the right amount of sexual and developmental confusion to make them empathetic if perturbed killers. The Herman character is perhaps the most compelling and developed of the sons. The ending is directly alluded to in the beginning of Rob Zombie's "The Devil's Rejects".Don't skip this if you want to see Depression era criminals, Corman exploitation, or Winters playing psychologically deranged."So Fucked Up" highlight: Mama keeps a boy in her bed every night

Zoran S (ag) wrote: Wow. This is, without a doubt, the craziest slapstick/ musical I've ever seen. I am not sure I can accurately describe its tone. It plays a bit like the Marx Brothers crossed with Preston Sturges if both were on speed and hallucinogens. Or something like that. I especially love the densely layered self-referential jokes characters make about the film we are watching. This really needs to be seen. It's a genuine oddity.

John R (ag) wrote: 161124: This film, though enjoyable, lacks pop. Probably because a similar story has already been done, and done better; and I've seen it many times. Does ET ring a bell? Is there anyone here old enough to remember that one? Outside of that small gripe, I liked this film. My boy, eleven, loves it. Earth to Echo features a new cute alien and the ever ominous, but in this case unbelievable, government types. More importantly, it contains a wonderful message about friendships and the ties that bind. Nice. Brought a little tear to my eye, even now, on this third viewing. Though the story lacks originality, who knows, perhaps in 30 years my boy will look back on it like I look back on ET?
