This Spanish language film is classic example proving that you don't need very high budget to make a thriller film. Gripping story telling and connecting all the dots will glue the audience in their seats. Its sad that this masterpiece didn't bag many accolades in film festivals.

Maybe that's just because of his extremely good filmography up to this point; his previous three films were absolutely brilliant, bleak and clever in my eyes, and maybe if Biutiful was made by a different director I'd like it more, because it just wasnt up to his usual standards.I think the problem is that I didn't really connect much with this story, it didn't leave me with any particularly powerful emotions like his others did. Maybe that's because of the weird, out of place spiritual stuff that seems to have been planted in there with no real reason or question. Or the things that aren't really very important to the story, which is quite a lot. But, it did have some eye opening moments, with a pretty devastating, poverty stricken environment. It was also improved a hell of a lot by Bardem's powerful performance and Inarritu's directing. It's just not a film that leaves you with much to think about, I'm not totally sure what it was trying to say, too much maybe? It's quite bleak (in a good way) and overall a solid film, just no where near his usual standards.

Matt M (ag) wrote: Sans Soleil is the top of the crops when it comes to the reflective and deep essay documentary, and it is no wonder that it comes from the mind of the always ground breaking and meditative Chris Marker. This film is an overpowering and unique experience, and while the film's challenging nature inevitably restricts its audience appeal, anyone willing to let themselves be carried away by the images and the collection of thoughts will find it very thought provoking and certainly worthwhile.

Martin T (kr) wrote: Let's just get this out of the way: at least half of the humor in this movie is terrible. Corny gags that were stale even in 1941, "wacky" sound effects, cheesy slapstick. I was groaning a LOT. But man, you have to admire the sheer anarchy of it. This is the Marx Brothers times Looney Tunes times a hundred. It's truly a case of anything goes. And to be fair, some of the jokes are pretty good (the Rosebud line is a howl). For me, what really saves this movie from all the bad comedy is the song and dance, all of which I thought was terrific. Highlights are "Watch the Birdie", the jazz number (it's a little suspect that all the black people are relegated to one section of the movie, but at least it's done somewhat respectfully) and the Busby Berkeley tribute. And I never knew Martha Raye was such a great performer, to me she's always just been the scary-looking Polident lady. As much as I hated a lot of the jokes, I have to admit that the overall experience is a hoot.

Zach M (ca) wrote: It was wathchable entertainment. The story has it's moments of decency but too many plot holes. It was funny to see Paul Walker and Gerard Butler, much younger and enjoying themselves.
