Sad Vacation

Kenji, abandoned by his mother, scrapes out a meager existence doing odd jobs including driving bar hostesses and their customers home. Besides this he takes care of the sister of an old friend in jail and a young illegal immigrant. But his life reaches a turning point when he happens to meet Chiyoko, his long lost mother. She is now married to Mamiya, the owner of an express package delivery service. They also have a teenage son, Yusuke. Subdued feelings of alarm, discomfort and resentment between Chiyoko, Kenji, and his half brother Yusuke hide underneath and are seemingly caused by the inseparable blood ties that seem to wield control over everyone's destiny. Is blood that powerful? What exactly defines a mother or a father? Barbara S (ru) wrote: I wanted and expected to like this movie but found it very slow. The characters were not compelling and nothing really happened. The best thing about it was that it really captured the era but it was way too long.

Volo M (it) wrote: It's sub-par to the anime series in pretty much every aspect. The dialogue is full of cliches and unused potential, the characters give some interesting ideas, but their motives just don't add up.

Alexander N (de) wrote: I'm a huge Stuart Gordon fan, and I wasn't expecting much from this one. I was expecting very cheesy turn-of-the-century CGI effects and the notable absence of Gordon's muses, Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton. However, the effects work is largely top notch, from the same Spanish studio that did the effects for "Pan's Labyrinth." The acting is more than acceptable from Ezra Godden in the role Jeffrey Combs was meant for but mainly by the excellent Spanish supporting cast, most notably a remarkable late turn by the great Francisco Rabal. This is well worth seeing, maybe the last great Lovecraft adaptation, very skilled mix of good quality CGI and very good practical effects.

Ilja S (it) wrote: The 'last' Star Trek movie pretty much suffers from the same problems as the first one (The Motion Picture). It has an interesting premise, but fails to deliver an interesting movie or any memerable action scenes. The visulas are top notch, and the acting is good as ever with the NG crew, but ultimately even Tom Hardy can't make the appearance of this installment outstanding.

Brian C (jp) wrote: Really enjoyable, albeit cliched and unoriginal, story about a group of friends that play with a ouija board and don't follow the rules (twice). The mystery of this is actually good, and the rules are interesting. The only real let down was the extremely awful acting of one of the actresses. She is so beyond annoying that is really disrupts any tension that builds. The ending is quite good!
