Peter F (kr) wrote: Fantastic topic matter bogged down by corn dog direction and editing. High production value and B acting makes the 2hr film bearable. Music is laughably out of place.
Maikki R (kr) wrote: After i saw few trailers, my hopes went quite high, but when i actually watched it, i was quite disappointed. I thought it would be good, since Colin Firth is in it, and i've never seen a bad movie from him - but ehm. This one was boring! I thought that nothing really happened in this one, and when something did happen, it did happen much too fast! The story was average, it could've been better. Minnie Driver was sweet, and she did the best acting in this one. But i was truly disappointed. I didn't fell asleep while watching it, but i certainly wouldn't watch it again. The story was nonsense, it could've been made better.
Melissa M (es) wrote: This movie is like Opera. Either you love it or you hate it. I first hated it, but now I love it and can't stop watching it. It's not terribly funny, romantic, or action filled, but it's amusing all the same to watch a little part of someone else's life.

Stephen L (gb) wrote: While there are some genuinely funny moments most of the time you're laughing at the movie instead of with it. The script and plot are full of cliche and overwrought dialogue and half-baked symbolism. The whole teen rebellion and angst and coming of age thing has been done to death, even in 1985 when this movie was made. Most of the actors do a decent job with what they're given though, Colin Firth being perpetuously uncomfortable and Timothy Spall being his usual smarmy and disgusting. Some of the acting is overblown though, like the field hockey coach who's wound way too tight and the boarding school headmaster that's such a parody that he seems like a copy of a Graham Chapman Monty Python character. The main problem is that there's no subtlety. Everything is on the nose and this kills whatever depth and meaning the filmmakers were attempting.
Robbie N (gb) wrote: A movie that is worth watching solely on the antics of Jim Carey, as all other performances seem to wither in comparison. The general idea of the movie is pretty ordinary, but at most should be applauded for it's originality, though not to say that the movie isn't entertaining. It's entertaining for the most part, but for a movie that seems to focus on the sole point of making the audience laugh, the end result is quite the disappointment. I suppose you could watch it for a brainless hour and a half to chuckle a bit, but why you'd choose this movie is beyond me. It's one of Jim Carey's most flamboyant and energetic performances, and has a family friendly seal on it, but fails to sustain anything that is absolutely hilarious, which is a failure for a movie that is reliant purely on it's laugh ratio.
