(us) wrote: Surprisingly good film! It is a coming of age story that takes place in Amsterdam during the mid 80's. Frank (Layke Anderson) is a totally gay and out of the closet teen who has issues living with his traditional family so he leaves home one rainy night and ends up at a go-go boys place called House of Boys. There he meets Madame (Udo Kier) who runs the place and decides to hire the boy initially as a bartender, later on as a dancer/stripper. While at this home he meets other boys such as Angelo (S. Webb) who desires to undergo a sex change surgery to become a woman, Jake (B. Northover) who is straight and only "gay for pay", and a few other guys. A friendship develops between Jake and Frank that will test them as time goes by. Acting was good, the music score was nice as well and the writer/director did a fine job with this one. So many teens and even adults fall into the lure of easy money, sex and drugs without realizing that there is a heavy toll to pay and actions have consequences, some detrimental and even fatal. I dare not reveal anything more otherwise I will give it away but rest assured that House of Boys indeed gives a real, raw and deep understanding of the true meaning of love. Recommended and available on Netflix instant streaming on HD.

(es) wrote: you could litterally take away the first forty-five minutes of this movie and be left with a decent b-movie zombie flick. I imagine that Bill Hinzman saw the zombie movie craze of the mid eighties and thought... "Why not Bill Hinzman!?" this movie is an attempt to make a short scene from the original "Night of The Living Dead" into a full-length movie. the first half of the movie contains what may be the worst acting i have ever seen. after the long-winded and completely unnecessary introduction, the movie gets a little better and more tolerable. all i can say is that this movie had the potential to be better than it was.

I've always seen him playing really cool, suave, debonair type characters, and it was such a pleasant delight to see him play the shy, insecure, dorky Clarence, and he did it so perfectly. Of course, Gene is a shining star as always, his charm and charisma never ceases to amaze me, as well as his talent. The story was great, as were the musical numbers, but they felt like they were about 30 minutes too long. Still, it's better having 30 minutes of extra awesome dancing, than an extra 30 minutes of boring chatter. In the end, it's a classic musical, that you just can't help yourself but to love.

It served no purpose, it was easy to get across that she was a terrible person without all of that. The last half was much better, and more of what I expected. Still a movie that has been made over and over though. Very forgettable.
