I imagine if I'd seen this back in college when I was in my French nouvelle vague phase I would have enjoyed it much more. The visuals are striking and almost completely divorced from reality; in other words it is very stylistic. I can certainly tell this was made in the same era as Pigs and Battleships as well, even if the anti-Americanism/colonialism isn't as apparent. I just never really became invested in the story or dazzled enough by the stylistic flourishes to really get involved. There certainly isn't much of a difference between Yakuza and Samurai pictures though.
