(au) wrote: This is a pretty good movie but it has many parts where it's just copying other movies. This is pretty much another version of smurfs. The Trolls are smurfs, the crazy cook or just the cooks people in general is gargamel.

It definitely seems like this installment was produced too quickly just to feed off the first movie which was a lot funnier. There was A LOT of tasteless comedy in this movie. I know it's just comedy, but it's the kind of humor that just isn't funny anymore.

Benson plays a dead young starlet that I guess will only be allowed into Heaven if she can save the soul of the main character. Because Benson is highly watchable I'm boosting the score up a star.

The storyline for me, had no thought behind it and it's forgetable. Even now, I'm struggling to remember parts of it. I'm being generous by giving half a star.

The discovery of tapes from sessions with an ex-patient named Mary Hobbes reveals some startling secrets about the old building leading to a frantic climax. The choice to film this in a real-life asylum only adds to the atmosphere creating a brooding and unsettling feeling of dread as the film progresses. The Danver's State Mental Hospital was actually the first Asylum to develop and use the full frontal labotomy procedure on it's patients. This knowledge only adds to the atmosphere of the builing and as the characters start to crack under the pressure of their tight deadline (crew leader Gordy ensures he can finish the job in a mere 7 days) a foreboding feeling within the building itself seems to grow with each day and the pyschology's of the 5 men start to eerily unravel. Some critics cited the rather gore-laden ending to be an anti-climax to the astute atmospherics and pace of the rest of the film. I feel, however, that this complimented the film perfectly and when we discover the whole truth behind Mary Hobbes and why she was a patient it all makes perfect sense in the wrapping up of the story of the 5 men.

(ca) wrote: Another silly but essential Christmas classic (though it's more of an all holiday movie), Astaire is as dependable and entertaining as usual, and I actually liked Bing Crosby in a role for once; usually he's a non-entity in terms of screen presence and likability. It's sort of funny Astaire plays kind of a real asshole. Also has one of the better collection of songs for a musical that I've seen.

(br) wrote: Hitchcockian psycho-thriller at times. Tour de force performance from Bette. Great settings, score, costumes, etc. Repercussions of a lifetime of guilt. I can't think of another movie where complex sibling relationships/rivalries are so rawly displayed.Did't get more stars because ending/twist could have been handled better.
