Shadows of a Hot Summer
A story set in 1947 when Ukrainian right-wing anti-Communist guerillas, looking like and feeling like Nazi's, are trying to fight their way through Czechoslovakia to Austria. They come out of the forest to occupy a family's countryside farm house, kidnapping a doctor to help heal one of their wounded, but this could just as easily be about the post-war occupying forces in Eastern Europe, or the occupying Soviet forces in the 60's, as there is an initial belief that there is nothing anyone can do.

Sure, a few crying babies who want to see something more cosy and formulaic have thrown their toys out of the pram (see the critics review here) but no amount of clever comments can take away from this film's magnificence. It is perfect, uncompromising art of the kind money rarely allows to be made. Relish it, for it is a rare thing.

Okay, I will admit Hanks and Ryan have an instant sort of chemistry in their films, but something was just missing with the plot.I really liked Hanks here. He's totally likable and I can totally relate to his man stuck in a dead end job deal in the beginning of the film.I wish Ryan didn't play every single major female role in the film, as it takes away from the third part she plays; the one that you see on all the covers. She also plays a co-worker in the beginning with Hanks, and then the her main character's half sister as well. Just the story didn't need a gimmick like that. But as the blonde, she IS super adorable.I guess since the title suggests Joe will face a Volcano, I found it odd that that part is only the final twenty minutes! The story seemed to take it's time getting to that ending, and the island stretch needed far more time to make any sense. It got real cheesy in that section and seemed like the film was trying to find it's ending a tad too fast. It's decent, but mostly cause of the lead actors, not really because of a great told story.

It's an entertaining little mystery-farce that also makes a perfect last hurrah for these genre legends.

(de) wrote: The title is ridiculous, the movie most definitely is not. This is a fantastic movie, with a great premise, a great story, some great acting and a twist ending. The dilemma here is wondering whether or not Sam Worthington's character is going to jump or not, and if he is really innocent or not. Elizabeth Banks is also very strong here as the cop who talks down jumpers. An overall great time and a must see for everyone. RECOMMENDED
