Shake Hands with the Devil
In 1921 Dublin, the IRA battles the "Black & Tans," special British forces given to harsh measures. Irish-American medical student Kerry O'Shea hopes to stay aloof, but saving a wounded friend gets him outlawed, and inexorably drawn into the rebel organization...under his former professor Sean Lenihan, who has "shaken hands with the devil" and begun to think of fighting as an end in itself. Complications arise when Kerry falls for a beautiful English hostage, and the British offer a peace treaty that is not enough to satisfy Lenihan.

(fr) wrote: Story-wise, this was a solid attempt at a coming-of-age romance set in the music industry of the 50s and 60s. Illeana Douglas is absolutely cute and quirky in her leading role, with Davidson, Turturro and Dillon lending support. The music score by Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello ranges from peppy to soul-deep and memorable. The only drawback was that the film editing was so slipshod it got in the way of the story...and that's never good. It taught me that it takes a deft hand to make all aspects of movie-making work, including the stuff behind the scenes. Sadly, this was not one of them.

(gb) wrote: An advertising secretary (Lauren Bacall) gets swept up in a love triangle amonst two friends, one a millionaire playboy (Robert Stack) and the other is an employee of the millionaire father's company (Rock Hudson). It is apparent the millionaire playboy is something of a drinker but it's his very vulnerability that lures the secretary away to fall in love with him. Soon, the two are married and it's the friend who's stuck carrying the torch for her. Meanwhile, he's being pursued by the millionaire's sister, who happens to be the town floozy (and someone he wants nothing to do with). It's the stuff of soap operas and melodramas, but this fifties movie with it's fifties sensibilities has a lot of charm to it. The sister, Dorothy Malone, won an oscar for her over-the-top she-vixen role, and Robert Stack was nominated for his portrayal as well. The story moves briskly albeit predictably.

(es) wrote: Not as bad as the first half, but the lead actor changes from the last film to this one... and you would think it would be an improvement but no. This one at least made me giggle a lot. It's not good, and has the weirdest characters... but the puppets do a little bit more... The "America Rules" stuff got a lil annoying. I dunno. Not really worth the look, unless you are stoned or something.
(ag) wrote: I don't remember the first Pact that much to compare both of them, but I think that the first one was a little more superior, but not by too much. Therefore, this wasn't a very good movie because most of the story didn't make sense and also I didn't remember half of what happened on the first one. The acting was not that great and the whole story wasn't as strong as the first one, and I do have to say that the first one was more original and probably was better to left alone. In the end it left me more perplexed and confused because I still cannot get my head around all it's mythology and how everything is able to happen. ~September 20, 2014~
