Nick O (nl) wrote: What I loved most about "Gomorrah" is how wonderfully it takes its time and is so completely unhurried in expounding and expanding on the density of its gritty, gorgeous sprawl. I've heard Danny Boyle say about his favorite movie "Apocalypse Now" that the reason he adores it is because it isn't perfect. Hell, if that film isn't perfect, no way "Gomorrah" could possible be. Too bad, because I loved it. Take after long, crackerjack take director Matteo Garrone wants you to feel not only the tension but the quietness, the downtime and the heaviness of the thought and decision-making process that goes into enacting urban warfare. Turns out that's a huge, 137-minute task. The best mob mosaic of its kind since "Amores Perros" "Gomorrah" is a wholly first-rate crime flick, and the rare one that isn't interested so much in detailing physical acts of killing as it is in exploring the mindset of violence being something that's deceptively homegrown. It's got all the guts and unflinching grimness of a burned-out star.

Graham B (es) wrote: Ethereal French road movie about 2 twins travelling through France to Spain by any means necessary to get to the funeral of the mother they have never met. It's basically a tale of a fraternal relationship. There isn't much story. The journey is punctuated with sexual encounters and some rather physical fights between the two brothers. There is a character arc here...kind of, but it is clumsily done. It's very well shot, but there isn't anything memorable and the end of the film is an inelegant finish.

Dave R (ag) wrote: i suppose this movie deserves some credit for being one of the first to try and portray the vietnam war realistically on the big screen. i saw this as kid and it made an impression on me. 30 years later i just found it to be a somewhat inferior version of "full metal jacket" - even though this movie came out 9 years before it; they are very similar in many ways - even sharing a star: r.lee ermey!you're better off watching "full metal jacket" though.

Bob V (kr) wrote: According to every source I've come across, this is a masterpiece. I'm sure it is, and it looks very pretty at times. But this black and white Polish movie about Communism and the Home Army (I think) was damn hard to sit through. It took me 7 goes, falling asleep 4 times and I'm an insomniac for chrissakes, to finish all 247 minutes of this and at one point I had been staring a full 3 minutes at the screen before even realizing the DVD had actually frozen. Suffice to say, I watched it and still have no idea what it's about, maybe it deserves another shot later on, or maybe this masterpiece is simply beyond me.

Dane P (gb) wrote: An incredibly underwhelming thriller. It doesn't hold up and plays out like a stereotypical black and white movie. I give points though because it was made during WW2 so that was a pretty bold step

Derek C (br) wrote: While the first person view style of the film seems a bit of a bother at some parts and works really great at other parts, the film's story and characters are what really make this film intriguing.
