Samurai A (es) wrote: This is my favorite action film of all time!.John Woo proved to us with his previous film "The Killer" that he is the greatest director to depict action in films and "Hard-Boiled" is his greatest achievement to date.Though it may be the action that makes this film a legendary masterpiece, there are other aspects that also play a role in making it one of the the greatest films of all time.Few people noticed Woo's brilliant directing which can be linked to Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" and Akira Kurosawa's "Rashomon"-- both directors use a unique directing style that must have been an influence for this films close-ups and quick cuts.Chow Yun-Fat delivers his most gritty performance with Woo's best choreographed shoot-out scenes of his career.I have few words to explain how jaw-dropping and breathless it actually is.The action doesn't stop!.even once the credits have rolled the action continues(In your head). Some may enjoy "The Killer" more but I judge films on they're own and if I would have to look at the unstoppable amount of gunfire, explosions, stunts and action in this film than it is clear why this one is the more superior to me.This film will prove that there cannot be a greater action film out there for me as i've seen them all, except of course the future ones.Missing a viewing of this film will be the unforgivable sin to the action cinema!.The last forty minutes of this film depicts the greatest action sequence known to the world of film, ever!.The first thing you would want to do after seeing this film would be to buy a pair of guns and explosives so that you may continue the action!.The greatest action film of all time!
Grant S (it) wrote: Mediocre. Could have been very interesting, if told in a balanced way, but, unfortunately, this was made in 1941, so is really just a WW2 propaganda film. Filled with dramatic Shakespeare-wannabe speeches, and pretentious gestures, all of which are there to make the Germans out to be totally evil. Most irritating performance and character goes to Leslie Howard (who gets top billing over Laurence Olivier). Pretentious in the extreme. Olivier has a few speeches himself - the Shakespearean training comes in handy. Not all bad. The survival-adventure element (which I was hoping was going to be the only element) is entertaining.
