The visuals in the train station definitely add to the immersion and are simply beautiful. The direction by Martin Scorsese is amazing, obviously. The acting by Asa Butterfield, Bin Kingsley, and surprisingly Sasha Baron Cohen was superb. The first act of this film is not really anything special, though it still has very good moments. The second and third acts of the film are where it shines. The latter two acts dive into the story of legendary film maker Georges Mlis (played by Ben Kingsley) prior to him meeting Hugo. Watching the two children go on an adventure trying to figure out the meaning of something they discover in the first act (the picture) was amazing and I know everyone says this but it really makes you feel like a kid again. In the end the only word I can use to describe the emotions I felt in the end is joy, the ending just made me feel happy. Overall, this movie truly shows the magic of cinema and is nothing less than amazing.

I liked the concept the stories overall were interesting but the execution was very uneven with some strong moments that were well performed in between many badly executed, overacted, and just silly and stupid scenes, especially in the comedy scenes. Will Ferrell though funny at times was a bad casting choice I believe and I've never liked Amanda Peet; Chloe Sevigny and Jonny Lee Miller played their roles well, not great but good enough. Radha Mitchell's character started fairly well with some strong moments at the beginning but ended in some messy overacting and bad direction I believe. She looked good in the comedy role but it was just silly and badly done overall. I still gave this a 3 out of 5 because it was entertaining enough and it was a good try and concept, but the execution was not at all great. *Update; I just read that Woody Allen originally wrote this script specifically for Winona Ryder but because of her shoplifting conviction couldn't get her insured, and I can totally see how Ryder would have been perfect for the role. As well Will Farrell's role was originally suppose to be played by Robert Downey Jr. who would have been a bunch better suit for this film, but he too could not be used because of his personal problems at the time also. Too bad, because this film would probably have been much better with those two in it.
