Steven G (mx) wrote: So good that it's almost heartbreaking it couldn't be better. Take This Waltz occasionally has too much indie movie quirkiness for its own good, but during its more moving scenes, Take This Waltz is a powerful experience, mixing heartbreak, romance, and sexiness effortlessly.

Serge L (de) wrote: Obviously very well done. Since based on a child book, the story is disneyesque at times. The war reenactments and locations are positively stunning of realism. The story is also too excellent to be true, although we feel the danger and see much killings. The fights in France were just killing fields for able men. In reality, most war horses were used for meat at the end of the war.

Bill R (jp) wrote: This was a good epic. Not too long but I think there was a few scenes that I think could of been passed and wouldn't of changed the story at all. But this is worth watching if your into these type of movies.

Christopher J (fr) wrote: It's extremely hard to get your hands on this film right now, along with John Flynn's also-brilliant Rolling Thunder. But tracking it down is totally worth it. Duvall and Joe Don are bad-ass as they hit every single joint in town belonging to The Outfit. Robert Ryan growls well as the villian. The intensity and pacing is perfect, never letting up and always moving forward. It's another great 70s crime film and definitely, I feel, one of the best. Existential, motivations shown through performance nuance, violent in the right moments, funny in the right moments (but hey, it's Westlake!), and it's got a feeling to it that's quite unique. A winning combination!

Kyle B (gb) wrote: It's kind of boring but has some great things going for it like wonderfully crafted war scenes and amazing sound design and a good script. George C. Scott declinded his Oscar and good for him because he didn't deserve it in the first place. He just seemed like a grumpy old man the whole time looking through binoculars every other scene. It's not a bad movie it's just one that didn't thrill me like the material seems like it should have

Blake P (ag) wrote: Fantastic film noir! Detective Phillip Marlow (Powell) is hired by a psychotic man, who's looking for a missing singer, and a jade necklace. Helped by a rich man, his wife (Trevor), and his daughter (Shirley) the more Marlowe gets into the case, the messier it gets. This was a great vehicle for Dick Powell, who was really known for being a song and dance man. Here, he shines, and really did a good job on Marlowe, compared to Humphrey Bogart in The Big Sleep. Trevor and Shirley are wonderful too as the "mysterious women" and even though their appearances are few, they're very well done. Dmytrk did a great job directing, making this a great noir, but not ever trying- to hard. I recommend this movie highly, and the surprise ending will really get you.

Richard S (au) wrote: Sharing the central character's name meant I needed to discover what Richard did and I'm glad I did because it was a very decent film. It's essentially about a young man living a privileged life in Dublin. Richard's parents have provided a comfortable life, he has a great group of friends, he is well liked and respected and he's just met the perfect girl. What follows is a story about the split decisions we make at the height of our emotions, and the consequences of this on the world around us and the people we love. I thought Jack Reynor was superb in the central role, a character desperately trying to keep up the facade that everyone has grown so used to while at the same time his world is crumbling around him. Having previously directed Garage, and later, Room, the director is skilled at creating fragile worlds where emotional and moral conflicts are heightened.
