Instead (at least for me), he comes off as annoying, arrogant and deceitful. That should be a recipe for an intriguing doc, but Maynard is either too self-aware, too non-chalant or is just a bad actor at even playing himself. I give the movie 2.5 because of the Sedona backdrop and the grapes and the wine bottle looked pretty cool.

Studded with clips, and interviews with cinematographers, archivists and movie directors. It should have been longer and perhaps more detailed.

And I do think that gimmick is a good word to describe the twist in this particular story, as the film did feel drawn out, and I think would have worked better as a short. But it's not a short. And it works pretty well.Paltrow does a reasonable British accent, and gives two good performances of the same character- so really she gives a general good performance. The film works, although it is a little contrived, and nears the edge of soap opera a couple of times, but it is a fine romance that should please the romantics of the world. It definitely starts to feel a little repetitive after a while, and you start to just follow one story, and the problem I had was the story that I was more compelled with didn't end the way I wanted to etc. Romance. The perfect comparison piece to this is Cloud Atlas as it has the same ideas in some respects, with the same characters- kind of, in different stories, but I believe Cloud Atlas worked as the stories were all different, while with this, it is the same story in a different structure, with the same characters. So the film is always doomed to repetition.

I don'n know any other way to describe it. **** (out of ****) ASerendipity - Mostly predictable, sometimes flat and a little bit boring, Serendipity is still an okay romance because of John Cusack. I love his energy here. Kate Beckinsale is hit-or-miss in just about everything she's done (exception - Snow Angels), so here she's...well, she's not great. I kinda liked it, kinda didn't. ** (out of ****) CShallow Hal - Jack Black is hilarious. He never faisl to make me giggle, chortle and belly-laugh til I almost pee. I haven't seen Nacho Libre, and never will. This one shocked me with an ending that drews tears. *** (out of ****) BThe Story of Us - I grew up with parents who argued constantly and, to this day, they still act like spoiled, rotten children when the subject is the other. The Story of Us is a bit grating, having sort of been-there-done-that, but I love Bruce and Michelle and they have great chemistry here. The restaurant table conversations with friends are very funny. *** (out of ****) BThat Old Feeling - Annoying as all hell, there's minimal joy to be found in Bette Midler's little outbursts. The film, though, is completely useless trash. *1/2 (out of ****) D
