This elegy for the general loneliness and quietness of rural America, and for being true to a self partially developed but still being learned. It will always disappoint if one expects an action film, or the phony rugged individualism of a John Wayne film. The country ain't that way. It moves at the speed of horses walking, with the beauty of the walk framed by big lonely views. It's a classic coming of age film of great taste and restraint. Thank you Mr. Thornton for a beautiful film, even though it has been greatly misunderstood. And thank you, Roger Ebert, for seeing the film for what it is.
