(ag) wrote: A moving portrayal of the Nazi-organized French roundup of over 19,000 Jewish men, women and children during the Holocaust. It is so difficult to grasp the evil of these historical events. But we must never forget them - and these stories are so important in helping us remember the many who died and the many who were courageous in supporting Jewish families. The movie is nit, however, as good as it could be. While it is apparently faithful to events, the direction is overdone and cliched giving it a somewhat wooden feel with a sentimentality that doesn't quite end up achieving its aims.

(es) wrote: If you ask me, Joel Schumacher's work tends to be mediocre. It is rare that he makes a film that captures my attention. For me, this might be is best film. Though far from being great, it does offer Michael Douglas' interesting performance. Schumacher's film never fully commits to being one movie which creates an ultimately unsatisfying experience. Is this dark satire? Is this a horror film? Is this an examination of an ordinary man who gets pushed around to point of a psychotic break? Or is this attempting to be a character study of sociopath who finally breaks into a rage-fueld violence? It is never clear. In some filmmaker's hand this refusal to adhere to any specific genre or provide us with a fuller understanding o "D-fens" (subtle character name, no?) --- might have worked. Though it ultimately fails, Michael Douglas' performance makes the film interesting.
