Alex M (br) wrote: Really don't see what everyone thought was so crazy and amazing about this film. The horror aspect of the film is the overall bizarre juxtaposing of sex, an abusive and pedophile father and a child. He makes her watch him(secretly through a violin case) and his wife make love, and then later, puts his wife in the case. It seems the quality of the story takes a backseat for the perverse and controversial content of the movie. You gotta love film for the very reason that this kind of story exists and is able to be made and shown to the public- but I can't say that this movie was particularly worth making. To each his own, I didn't find time well spent watching this otherwise slow, meandering movie about a disturbed young girl's perspective of her father.
Courtney S (us) wrote: Very enjoyable movie. Unlike 'Chocolat' it's not full of historical, social stuff. However, what I like most about Claire Denis is that she films people when they're not talking, when they're alone and then you can really see how odd all our various social interactions and institutions are. She's like a film-poet of the mundane, of sexual and social tension and anxiety, and especially of desire.

Max M (ru) wrote: Even a master filmmaker like Jean Renoir cannot make a tolerable "French Farce".The usually extraordinary Ingrid Bergman, who plays Elena, a Polish Princess whose romantic liasons land her in the middle of a political and military plot in turn-of-the-century France, is so out of place and ineffective in her performance. She seems to have absolutely no clue as to what is going on and why.Renoir even himself admitted that this is not one of his better efforts and that the only reason he made it was so that he could work with Bergman in a comedic role. Take his word for it.
