Marquis Sévéro, a rich, lazy Parisian, wants to divorce his wife so that he can marry his own goddaughter Denise. But Denise herself loves André Berval, an engineer employed by the marquis. Filled with jealousy, the marquis sends André to the Antilles, to prospect some land he has just acquired. He promises André that he can marry Denise if he is successful in the tropics, but he then writes to Alvarez, his manager at the site, asking him to prevent André from ever returning to France. The brutal Alvarez forms an instant hatred for André when the engineer breaks up Alvarez's attempt to rape Papitou, a beautiful native girl. Papitou becomes devoted to André, and protects him against Alvarez's schemes. But she faces a crisis herself when she learns that André plans to marry Denise.

Spencer K (ca) wrote: an interesting, different, icy little thriller with a great per image from Julianne Moore. it may be a little tonally uneven but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. an entertaining David Cronenberg movie worth a watch.
Brad S (ag) wrote: I am completely lost as to why this film is so beloved. I really hated it. I forced myself to finish it because seemingly a film fan like myself should have seen this movie. But what a complete waste of my time. The music and writing are horrendous. It's all just noise that had no connection with me. I can't even believe this is a Scorsese film. It's nothing like his many great films. It's amateurish in its filmmaking craft and performances.
Matthew S (gb) wrote: Christoph Waltz gives an excellent performance, but this is always expected. The film is full of ideas but most often it felt to me like the film was far to concerned to look and be as weird as possible. So many odd gadgets and frantic acting from the supporting cast only causes the interesting aspects of Gilliam's film to be obscured. There is also the frustrating problem of Gilliam doing his best to make this movie look like a big blockbuster when it is not. If only had focused more on the existential ideas around society, consumerism, technology, industry, paranoia, depression and ultimate question regarding the meaning of life. In the end Gilliam's film feels like it should be a satirical comedy -- but at its heart this is tragically sad film. All the "madcap" madness and BRAZIL / TWELVE MONKEY references just get in the way and Waltz's talent is sadly wasted.

I love this movie, I use to stay up late to watch it on USA's "Up all Night" with Rhonda something (she had huge boobs). And the fact that you had the band Vixen and Malicai in it just added to the greatness. Does anyone have any similar suggestions?
