(fr) wrote: This movie was a very unique and strange one. It was divided in three parts that could almost been not related with each other, but they were. To me, the best ones were the first one and the last the one, because they were more creepy and terrifying, but they also had an excellent atmosphere and cinematography. Nonetheless, the second one was interesting too but wasn't scary nor kept it creepiness of the movie. What I really liked was the style of the movie and how it referenced the Italian giallo style and its cinematography which was pretty cool and worth checking out. My only problem with the film was that it lacked a story and a base to go from, because it simply started and suddenly ended after three chapters without a plot or an explanation. Because I don't think the movie can be all about its look but also its content is very important, and this one was lacking it. And apparently after I made some research, I learned that the movie deals with the sexual awakening of the lead female character, and that's what it's about, although it was very sensual and tamely erotic, it kind of makes a little sense. Therefore, I am glad that I watched this film, because I had never heard of it and it has some pretty cool imagery and some unforgettable scenes that surely get deep under your skin. ~September 20, 2014~

Also, keep in mind that it was made to be displayed as a six-part miniseries on European television, and not necessarily to be viewed in a single sitting. The attention to detail is incredible, as are the overblown novelistic story lines. Any fan of the period piece should be able to find much to appreciate.
(br) wrote: This movie rating is the strongest example I've ever seen that Rotten Tomatoes (a site I generally like) can be utterly utterly misleading. This movie is a spy/Neo-Noire gem. Not in any half-arsed way, but a real well put together classic in the same broad genre as the Quiet American (Michael Caine version). I'm a fan of Neo-Noire and spy films and WWII dramas, but that just makes it my genre. I'm still super critical when it comes to movies, and this one rocks. 4% my ass. I laugh at the other reviews here!

(au) wrote: A funny film by all means. The performances are great across the board and the cinematography is colorful and as 70s as it gets. I recommend it for all you who love Brazilian cinema and those who love fun films in general.
(ag) wrote: Classic Drama/Film Noir, and classic example of Wilder's economical story telling. Macmurray and Stanwyck are great, but Edward G. Robinsion (as usual) absolutely dominates right up to the end of the line.

Maybe it's because I've never been a big fan of Spike Lee's movies (except for maybe Malcolm X), but this movie didn't do much for me. I've always been curious about it, and finally got a chance to see this.I love all of the actors and actresses who were in it, especially Mira Sorvino. :-) but it just seemed like this movies was all over the map, talking about everything going on that summer in NY that may or may not have had anything to do with the Son of Sam killer. However, I found myself glewed to the screen until the end of the movie, so I guess that's the mark of a good movie, huh?
