Timothy A (jp) wrote: An interesting idea (one) stretched far too thinly. The creative use of soundscapes lasts about three minutes before it becomes glaringly obvious that the use of sound is primarily a budgetary measure for things they can't afford to portray visually. If nothing else, a great reason to forive every Hollywood film that ever got around long stretches focusing on a single character by having him/her talk to themselves to advance the plot.

While the premise is contrived, the story points to the deeper issues of identity, privilege, and the common bonds which unite all mankind who dream of a world where we can all get along and work together. The acting of these complex roles is exceptional. The cast works magnificently together to point out how much effort it takes to tear down the walls of sectarianism and stereotypes. Beautiful nuanced portrayals highlight this special film. Bravo to all!

Jonathan D (au) wrote: Did you know Meryl Streep can do a toe-touch? Seriously! And that Pierce Brosnan has a raspy yet macho singing voice? Kind of like a deeper Bryan Adams. Basically, if you like ABBA, if you like fun fluffy musicals, if you dig that type of energy, this is a blast. If not, move along. Colin Firth adds charm, Amanda Seyfried's got some pipes, the Greek scenery is gorgeous, and there's a lot of girl-power going on. Not a lot of substance, but that's not what it's going for. It just wants to give you a good time, and it succeeds. ***1/2 (out of five). Rated PG-13 for innuendo.

Rodney E (ag) wrote: Herzog's personal love letter to his main late actor Klaus Kinski is heartfelt and has all of the emotions that friends could put you through, for good or bad. Kinski's rare acting methods as well as his outbursts are documented. Kinski may have put gray hair on Werner's head but you find their friendship and collaborations to be rewarding. All of the behind the scenes footage from Fitzcaraldo and the Jesus stage performance is awesome.

Courtney M (ca) wrote: The combination of faux-tarantino dialogue, phony acting (despite having cast some talented actors), one dimensional women characters and generous use of rotating pans and handheld shots were too much.. i had to leave the theater with a case of nausea after 3 "episodes".. So unless this movie resolved itself by breaking the fourth wall in which the characters realized they were in a shallow attempt at a gritty detective story there's no way i could recommend it. The only good points were that there were a few good songs on the soundtrack (Marnie Sten, Cowboy Junkies.. et, al) though listening to them in this context was kind of like seeing a smart, pretty girl out at dinner with a real asshole.
