Song For a Raggy Boy is a 2003 film directed by Aisling Walsh. It is based on the book of the same name by Patrick Galvin and is based on true events. The film is set in 1939, on the brink of World War II, in the St. Judes Reformatory School, a ruthless Irish school for boys. Patrick Delaney 743 (Chris Newman) arrives at the school aged 13 and a half. He, like all the boys, is allocated a number which the priests use. Franklin, however, always uses the boys' names. Delaney is an attractive boy and he receives the unwelcome attentions of a pedophile priest, Brother Mac (Marc Warren), who molests and rapes the boy in the school toilets. Harry W (ru) wrote: Death Wish is a simple and predictable Charles Bronson fare, but it's one of his originals and is gritty and powerful with its thrills. Death Wish has a basic premise which sets the story up and then walks away to leave Charles Bronson to shoot everything that remains, and that's just what makes it work. Death Wish essentially wants to get its story out of the way fast because that's solely for the sake of characterising Paul Kersey in preparation for his vigilant ventures, and frankly by the time that it's all over viewers have been pretty shaken anyway. By that point we've all snapped and want the criminals dead, and so Paul Kersey makes our dream come true by going out and killing them with some great intense action and a simply gritty performance. The style of Death Wish is very reminiscent of noir and while it embraces the notion of vigilance, it does so in a fair manner as well as showing how the concept is a dangerous one in terms of how influential it is and how powerful the power can be to a person. Charles Bronson is that person, and he is a badass hero. See, Death Wish is one of the original one-man vigilante films, and as realistic as the story is, Charles Bronson gives a memorable performance that dresses him up like a responsible man or a detective but strips him down to the savage man he is at heart, and it's pretty awesome to see. Death Wish is one of his most original pieces, and it's a glorious violent spectacle.Kathleen Tolan's performance as his mentally troubled daughter is also memorable however small it is due to her portrayal of emotional instability, and Jeff Goldblum was pretty nuts in his film debut.Death Wish can also be seen as a commentary on crime and the police force for their lack of effort, and Paul Kersey serves as the memorable 1974 hero that reminds us that sometimes we need to do something for ourselves. While somewhat glamourising violence and vigilance, it clearly does not support the idea because Paul Kersey commits it as an act to fight against the streets, but he never finds the criminals that victimised his family and that serves as what sends him going. The trauma and his fear of nihilism is what pushes him, and the notion that Death Wish actually recommends is never to turn to nihilism. That's what makes Death Wish important in its message. So as the original streetwalking vigilante film, Death Wish is a gritty action piece which makes it simple to ignore any chance of clever writing or a wide range of ideas.

We also see the ever-suave Jason Isaacs, whose repertoire includes Lucius Malfoy and Captain Hook, take a turn as Sinestro when he was still a dedicated Green Lantern (something we didn't see in the pre-New-52 comics or the animated "GL: First Flight"--and there's a dramatic reason for doing him this way here). Perhaps the most enjoyable tale in this collection is that of Laira, who faces a clash between the warrior culture she grew up in and the GL Corps culture that is now her home; all, however, are well done and worth your time.
