Marvin B (jp) wrote: An ingenious mystery film featuring Japanese high school students from different clubs whose lives were affected by the missing title character.

The characters are all unlikeable, with their own unfortunate quirks, but the more I watched, the more interested I became in their antics! It was very entertaining, especially Regan's rapid switching on-and-off of supportive best friend/ jealous bitch / psychotic control freak. I wouldn't want to hang out with these coked out party animals, but I must admit I enjoyed watching them pull it all together for the wedding! This is definitely not Bridesmaids-style comedy, but it has it's place on the humour spectrum (towards trashy, I'd say).
Peter F (jp) wrote: A thoughtful and appealingly modest indie comedy that's as illuminating towards the world of film editing, as it is towards the struggles with keeping a relationship. A real treat for those looking for a good no-budget film streaming on Netflix.
Aden J (gb) wrote: I absolutely loved this 80's slasher movie. It has the eerie ambience and the mask was terrifying. I cannot believe this Canadian movie is underrated. The actors who portrayed these characters did a splendid job, especially Samantha Eggar. The tagline for this film, "6 beautiful actresses trying to get ahead, but when the curtain falls, 5 will be dead" implies the premise for you. The synopsis goes along the lines as this: An eccentric movie director, John Vernon (played by Jonathan Stryker) isolates his actress wife, Samantha (played by the amazing Samantha Eggar) in a mental institute to help her portray the mannerisms of a mad woman for a new role, but he doesn't release her for a very long time. Years later (now this is where the plot primarily starts), the director invites 6 actresses to his secluded estate for a prestigious audition for the title role in his latest film, Audra. When one of the chosen actresses mysteriously doesn't show up, they all presume she is unable to make it, so they carry on as it were. But a masked weapon wielding killer prows the premises of the villa and kills each actress, one by one. Supposedly, it's one of the 5 actresses attended- in order to obtain the assigned role. I cannot tell you enough how much i enjoyed this film. It's much more than a typical 80's slasher film- it's even more some. I possess 2 copies of this film; VHS and DVD . It's one of those rare stylish gems. :)

David L (de) wrote: Having enjoyed one prison thriller, I decided to watch another and found that it's very easy to confuse the plots as they all have a similar theme - sadistic wardens that are highly egotistical and lack compassion for their inmates (albeit it is a prison full of rapists and murders so you can forgive them on that front), the big bully that constantly threatens to sexually abuse the 'fresh meat', and the plan to escape always materialises into a great success. In comparison to Shawshank Redemption, this is just an earlier version with poorer effects, slightly poorer dialogue, and even poorer props. I mean if prison officers can't tell a papier-mch dummy from a real person, I'm sure all prisons would be empty right now - I mean it didn't even look convincing on TV. The big difference with this film is that the plot to escape is at the centre of it all, whereas Shawshank's is being done in solidarity on the sly. Here we get a day by day run down on how the events unfold as the group of 4 each play their part in the master plan. Again it's bulked up with sub characters that give it a juicer storyline and a degree of emotion, but yet again we all know just how it's going to end. Somehow, this doesn't necessarily detract from anything as the sense of wanting to witness the arrogant governor get his comeuppance totally takes centre stage when rooting for the inmate heroes. Despite the old fashioned cinematography, you can't help but enjoy this movie which has paved the way for several other jailbreak films and series of recent times. Nice one Clint!
