Gary G (br) wrote: (4-1/2 stars out of 5) Based on a true story, this film is one of those movies that you know is building to something. It unfolds slowing until you're practically begging to know what's going to happen. It's got some really great human relatable characters, not caricatures. You're rooting for everyone to have a happy ending, all the while waiting for the other shoe to drop, you know it's not going to end well but you're hopeful none-the-less. It's about a mother trying to find the son she gave up for adoption--who happens to be gay and was placed with a preacher's family who basically runs him out of his home when he was 17. Bonnie Hunt, although naturally funny really breaks your heart in this movie. I wish she got more serious work as an actress. She does not need to play the goofy best friend anymore. See this movie with your mom!
Jeff B (es) wrote: While beautiful cinematographically, there wasn't much to this movie. And the sudden jumps in time and multiple-role characters were a bit annoying, even if they were meant to be symbolic.
Petros T (es) wrote: With a very good score, fine acting from Emma Thompson, Pete Postlethwaite and especially Daniel Day-Lewis and a strong script, "In The Name Of The Father" is a very moving, thought-provoking film.
Christine R (br) wrote: Once again a movie I had no knowledge of that I enjoyed tremendously. A view of the bombing of London in WWII through the eyes of a 7 year old boy. Funny and touching recollection by John Booman in a movie that may be one of the best stories about growing up and family that I have seen. I loved it.
Jim H (ca) wrote: With the help of a friend-zoned tomboy, a mechanic pursues his high school's troubled beauty queen.By itself, this is an inoffensive John Hughes classic. Dealing with all of Hughes's normal themes of high school alienation and class differences, the film's optimistic and charming story work. However, it doesn't take a genius to see that Some Kind of Wonderful is a gender-reversed Pretty In Pink, and there we find some notable issues. Spoiler Alert: the protagonist ends up with his friend, not the slightly upper class object of his affections, but in Pretty in Pink the female protagonist finds love with the upper class prep boy. Why the difference? Could it be that the woman, unable to procure a stable living without the help of an economically viable husband, must choose a mate based on earning potential whereas the man is able to choose based on affection and loyalty, qualities that are far more likely to result in a viable relationship? It seems so, which bespeaks a sexism that I haven't seen in Hughes's other work.Overall, I enjoyed the film until I thought about it.
Rodney E (br) wrote: John Landis had a lot of great movies in the 70's and 80's and this was one that I never saw until last night but heard everything from it sucks to it being underrated. So an undervalued Landis movie starring one of my faves the Goldblum, what could go wrong? Well the problem is that this feels too much like After Hours and After Hours is the masterpiece while this definitely gets dated by a semi-cheesy 80's soundtrack. Still Golblum is great as the insomniac who stumbles upon Michelle Pfeiffer and her drama as he is trying to find noctural activities to help with his sleep problem. Cameos galore fill the movie up and there are some hearty laughs with Goldblum on a movie set. About the greatest selling point that I can attempt to give Into the Night is the idea that David Bowie has a knife fight with Carl Perkins. While not as classic as Coming to America, Trading Places, or even Spies Like Us, Into the Night is worth checking out
