Michelle I (it) wrote: This movie is a slice of life during one weekend of a person's life, which realistically depicts the cost of working as a first responder. You are called to intervene at the worst time in a person's life and rarely know the outcome. The weight of witnessing the suffering takes its toll and individuals cope as best they can.

Immediatly Lt. Clemens (Gregory Peck) is ordered to counterattack and retake the hill, whose value is symbolic and whose military importance is minamal. But when Clemens finally takes the hill he suffers heavy casualties and the Chinese prepare their own counterattack while his superior debate whether to reinforce the hill. Massive points right away for telling a little known action of an often overlooked war (1st Battle of Pork Chop Hill during the tail end of the Korean War). Peck is good as always, yet the concluding chapter of Director Lewis Milestone's anti-war trilogy (1930's All Quiet on the Western Front, 1945's A Walk in the Sun) suffers in comparason thanks to a disagreement of tone between Milestone and Star/Producer Peck. Still defenitly worth a viewing. Historical Side Note: The Chinese would eventually capture Pork Chop in July of 1953 when UN forces decided to withdraw after 5 days of fighting (known aptly as the 2nd Battle of Pork Chop Hill).

There is the unbroken chain of realist directors who learned from each other not only from viewing each other's movies, but from personal interaction...Von Stroheim, Renoir, and Visconti.

It's actually not as harrowing as you might expect, since it tries to portray the Nazi party in a powerful and positive light. If you were to ignore everything you've ever learned in history class and only see them from this film, it just might actually work. It's really quite fascinating and enthralling to watch, and purely from a film standpoint it is actually a marvel to look at.

Sgt C (nl) wrote: (84%)Without doubt one of the better Dracula based movies ever put to film. It's certainly up there with Universal's classic, Hammer's, or pretty much anything else, even Blade 3. The opening is one of out and out horror with really hideous looking deformed mummified corpses that marks one of the sharpest descents into terror ever, but thankfully for the squeamish there's some footage of fluffy kittens playing to balance out the dread. This follows the actual Dracula story quite well, and like the novel the best part is Jonathan Harker making his way toward the count and his grim fate. Klaus Kinski's is superb as the foul monster, and even though I found him very amusing in parts there's still something very creepy about the design. The stunning Isabelle Adjani is also fantastic as Lucy Harker who fits the role better than anyone else could. The only issue here is the fact that this is at its best in the first half, while the second is just not as strong, but overall this is a must-watch for all followers of Dracula: the dirty old man.
