Excellent portrait of a man and his impact on American history

I don't know who I would recommend this to, other than myself, as this is most definitely not an audience type film but independent art. The film is, first and foremost, empathic. Michael Winterbottom has proven time and time again that he is a multi-talented director, and does an excelent job here, neither romanticizing what happens nor descending to the level of clinical study. The structure has its strengths and weaknesses, and the plot can be pedestrian at times, but it never betrays the characters. The film is structured like a killers-on-the-run road movie (Badlands, Kalifornia, Natural Born Killers) intercut with interview segments with one of the characters. Both leads absolutely bare (both literally and figuratively) themselves on screen, bravely, encompassing and embracing their fucked up characters. There are moments in this film that are so searing, of such brutal honesty, that it becomes difficult to keep watching

It becomes very predictable after watching a lot of movies of its kind ("Good Will Hunting", "Scent of a Woman", "Gran Torino"). A film exploring the drama that arouses between an old man and a young man befriending each other

When he meets George, another western person, he targets his anger towards him to realize in the end that he is not the enemy but a friend and to make up with him and maybe with himself. He is angry to what he has done and he punishes himself. Scott Glenn's character is the deeper and most complicated one and Glenn handles that extremely well. She starts as totally helpless, even attempts to commit suicide, to finally become healed, stronger, and stay there to continue the revolution. She is completely the opposite. Oyanka Cabezas's performance is also unique even though she is non an actress and this is the only movie she ever played in. And all this in a very subtle way. Robert Carlyle who does his debut with this one along with Trainspotting same year, and now considered one of the most promising British actors, shows a great transition from having the power to completely loosing it over the course of their journey to Nicaragua, till he finally changes and accepts it. All performances are superb. Half fiction and half documentary, shows in a discrete manner the situation in Nicaragua in late '80s, through the three heroes, Robert Carlyle as the Scot bus driver, Oyanka Cabezas as Carla the Nicaraguan refugee and Scott Glenn as the x-CIA American activist. A great movie from political director Ken Loach

Seems infinitely more traditional than Frozen but is very lush and engaging with a very taut climax

Not sure if it's the writing or the directing but this is uneven at best

The entire time you're expecting some kind of awesome twist that almost every good sc-fi movie gives you, and it just doesn't come. People die off in fairly mundane ways that have been done better with more dramatic effect in much better movies. And then a little more nothing happens. Nothing happens. Incredibly boring

The worst bit has to be when that guy pulls his own skin off!!!!!

Best I've seen by a mile. And that's a hell of a thing for me to say! Awesome (and I mean awesome) kung fu wire work as well. At this rate, he'll have a better movie back catalog than Jet Li. Another good Donnie Yen film

watched due to my willingness to watch anything with John Cusack and while I didnt hate this one it is defintely not one of the better films the '80s had to offer. utterly bizarre non-sensical '80s movie
