Mason B (it) wrote: Allow me to begin this review by saying that I have absolutely no problem with exploitation cinema. I love trashy, cheap thrills and shock value as much as the next person. So I knew exactly what I was going to be in for when I started watching Hobo With a Shotgun, a title that tells you almost all you need to know about the plot, but I'll summarize anyway. A hobo, played by Rutger Hauer, comes to a city so crime-ridden and corrupt as to make Gotham city look ideal, and starts to dispense justice with a shotgun. The films attempts to recreate the appeal of 70's horror movies with all the gore, theatrics, cheap thrills, and shock tactics, and I only found it half-succesful. There is some fun to be had in its outlandish premise, and the film does a good job of re-creating the low-budget feel of exploitation cinema. However as the film tried harder and harder to shock me, the more I found myself unimpressed. The film actually gets a bit dull in a few parts. It is able to pick itself up for a good, explosive ending, but this is mostly for the big exploitation junkies.

stefano l (au) wrote: Mr Nobody is an extremely complex film, so complex that I didn't understand it well after I have read some reviews. First of all because it's complex in its structure, and although is not impossible to understand how the structure works, the perpetual use of flashbacks that span in different "parallel universes" of the same story it's so confusing that everything melts in your mind after very few minutes from the beginning of the movie. If you are not a super-sci-fi fan then you could completely lose interest after 20 minutes, but also if you are a super-sci-fan this is not unlike to happen. Choce is the main topic of the movie and everything goes around the implications of the choices made by the main character throughout his entire life. Clearly, this is what makes the structure so confusing. Anyway, it's a movie you love or you hate. Usually I hate movies like this one, but Jaco Van Dormel dared so much but managed to master everything so perfectly, with maybe only a hint of redundancy that could be avoided, that I couldn't manage but to appreciate it a lot!
Holly D (ca) wrote: The fake accents were starting to drive me nuts only a few minutes in... the story was less than special and had a little too much going on. Maybe if the movie had only been about the employees of the cafe, it would have been better.

Omar M (br) wrote: Boa vs Python knows what it is and tries to have fun with it. It succeeds on a basic level of monster movie fun. The effects are pretty bad and it gets really stupid, but it has some infectious fun and the cast is game.Pros: It has fun with the silly concept, Angel Boris nudityCons: Bad effects, dumb attempts at humor

Jacob M (us) wrote: Stunning character driven masterpiece. Bringing the novel of Tolkien to life to incredible success. Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellen, and Elijah Woods are all perfect fits for their respective characters. The real star of the film, however, is the director Peter Jackson. As a child I loved these books and now I have the films to have when I don't have time to read the books. The visuals are just wonderful. I found myself looking around in awe of the world Jackson built. The only negative I have with this film is it is a bit long.
Josh M (nl) wrote: How can anyone enjoy this movie? It is hard to review because it is so sick, twisted, and disturbing. Its shock value is unprecedented and was even said to be a real snuff film. I guess that tells you how well the effects were. From a filming standpoint it is done very well, but the material is so rechid that most people will never watch it again. My review is conflicted.
Clint S (de) wrote: Have a beer, or twelve, and you should be alright with this one. Unless... You're TAKEN.I've said the word "cliche" during my lifetime. Never has a word been so fitting, and yet so unfitting at the same time. Taken has an undeniably ability to entertain. Liam Neeson plays a ex-government agent, now hyped bodyguard, who's daughter is kidnapped. He then proceeds to break many people, on his way to try and get his daughter back. I'm trying hard to hold back the laughter when talking about this. Let me break this down. For a film that is supposed to be an action-thriller, it is cluttered with quite decent humour. If they embraced how daft parts of this film are, I may have liked it more. You want a cerebral film? Don't watch this. You want a film with great dialogue? Don't watch this. You want a cliched action film? Well, here it is.The only performance that I think I can muster a mention for here is that of Liam Neeson. I don't think I have ever seen such comedic prowess in any being. He puts on showcase his best Bale-era Batman vocal impression. I mean he has a lot to thank for the writing, but his delivery of these lines is exceptional. Delivery in that cliched, deadpan, yet over-the-top manner equals absolutely hilarity, and is very well-placed in a film about his daughter being kidnapped from across the planet. Oh wait... This film isn't a comedy? That's a shame. Every other cliched character is played as just that in this film. Everyone is so serious in this film, and it really is hard to not bust a gut whilst watching. Every performance is so right yet so wrong, in a film that is so right, yet so wrong. These performances are not good, but they are fitting.I didn't expect such a film. It is great in its total blindness to how humorous it is. Roughly ninety minutes long, it never gets boring. It is a crime that such a script was ever written, but with such script I think they did the best they could have done. You are so taken out of this film by almost every element of it, that it somehow has you fully intrigued. It really is one of those "it's that bad, that it is good moments". There are absolutely no surprises in this film. You could map this film out with just the short premise. I cannot bring myself to think awful things of this film, because it did entertain me so very much. To finalize, go into this one without expectations. Never has an action-thriller been so non-thrilling, and so funny. I, personally give this film plaudits for being something that I never thought it could be. If you somehow make the mistake of thinking that this film will be a smart, enthralling action-thriller. Run. Run as fast as you can away from this film. However, if you're expectation is to have a laugh, then this film will deliver on that front. If you are a little more impressed by mindless action, give it a watch too. It isn't actually that bad. Honestly. I think.
