Based on the eponymous manga for girls by cartoonist Kiriko Nananan, the pic follows the ups and downs of four female friends in Tokyo looking for love and trying to cope with the responsibilities in their lives. The main characters, impeccably played by four powerful actresses, are modern, self-sufficient women and their stories are told with mild irony and a dash of melancholy. The result is a movie that is lighthearted at times, a little sad at others, crazy and sometimes serious, but always special, that investigates the psychology of its characters and offers an accurate depiction of urban Japan, thanks to its director’s know-how. While many overly ambitious directors struggle to tell even one fairly comprehensible story, Yazaki skillfully weaves a powerful depiction of not one, but four women, creating an indissoluble and moving whole that doesn’t succumb to sentimentalism. . John R (us) wrote: Some good visuals and interesting ideas are not enough to make up for a disjointed screenplay that wastes the potential of source material that could've made for a deep and intense supernatural psychological thriller.

Gavin J (gb) wrote: First I saw loverboy with Patrick Dempsey, and that was pretty decent. Now this. Im very impressed. This film was unpredictable and absolutely always entertaing. Dempsey just wanted to marry that one girl but her sisters kept tryin to seduce him, so he didnt kno wut to do. great film though, i recommend.

Mark H (it) wrote: Overlooked melodrama about a lumber tycoon who marries to further his career and abandons the woman he truly loves. Credible production is perhaps more fascinating for its behind-the-scenes shenanigans. Howard Hawks was fired by producer Samuel Goldwyn after directing the first half, and subsequently hired William Wyler to complete the film. This is reflected in the shifting storyline. Starts out as virile logging adventure then fades into an over plotted soap opera, all the while distinguished by solid performances. Character actor Edward Arnold stars as Barney Glasgow, the businessman determined to succeed. As both mother and daughter, troubled actress Frances Farmer is also worth watching in one of her rare film performances. Interestingly it was Walter Brennan who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his likable but unremarkable work as Glasgow's lifelong friend. Sweeping drama is also notable for the extraordinary logging sequences in the first half.
