Streets of New York torrent reviews

Michael L (mx) wrote: This movie is about the Japanese efforts to colonize Taiwan after it was ceded to them by a declining China in the early 20th century. It's mainly about an uprising of a large faction of the Seediq Bale, an indigenous tribe of quarrelsome, yet musical headhunters who live deep in the interior of the island. Although I watched the shorter international version on Netflix, I still thought that version had a lot of depth. The film explored key elements of the tribe's culture and the efforts of the Japanese to assimilate the tribesmen. Not all the Japanese were portrayed as total villains, but the feckless behavior of many of them helped bring about the uprising. The pacing and storytelling is excellent and the action scenes make for some good popcorn eating fun. The cinematography sure does make a viewer understand why the Portuguese called Taiwan Formosa, or the beautiful island.

Anthony T (es) wrote: When a film ends with to be continued, it's nearly impossible to rate... The story isn't finished, so how can I tell you if it's good? Overall, there were some interesting and suspenseful moments, which for a cheap movie like this to keep my attention enough, I guess the directior did a good job. So while it wasn't anything special, I do want to see the next one.

Juli N (fr) wrote: Simple plot, a tiny 500,000 budget, no big name stars, no bells and whistles! And yet it manages to frighten those who can imagine themselves in this terrifying situation! If you're like me and have a shark phobia to begin with then you'll have no trouble getting in touch with your inner fear as the tension and suspense mounts! The fact that it's based on a true story makes it even more horrifying!

Wesley B (ca) wrote: Classic straight to video Miike goodness. This is probably one of his most straightforward and entertaining yakuza movies. I would put it on par with the first Dead or Alive. His trademark taboo elements still worked for me, as a person who's probably seen about ten of his other movies.

Julie V (de) wrote: This movie is cheesy, mildly disturbing (or rather "ew" inducing), but mostly hilarious. The worms coming out of the shower head and filling up the tub, though... *shudder*

James R (nl) wrote: Bit of a disappointment, love Pacino and watched this because of him, never really got into this, character was fairly unlikeable and did not seem to develop.

David M (it) wrote: This film caught me by surprise and my discovering that it was a true story, made it all the more touching.
