John M (nl) wrote: My first Mae West. So this is about a voluptuous female (West) who has more than a few gentlemen callers, one of which is a criminal serving time. How will things shake out when he escapes from imprisonment? Mae West was always a name that I heard of, but knew next to nothing about. As soon as she enters the movie for the first time, you can see what the hype is all about, as she exudes screen presence and sex appeal. Everybody surrounding her plays the straight man (so to speak), while she is the only one without a filter, making passes and double entendres at will. Seriously, she can turn it on like a light switch, and the strongest part about this movie is watching her larger than life personality and how she has every single male here sitting in the palm of her hand. Her musical numbers peppered throughout are worthwhile, and her star power is what carries it. It's also worth mentioning that this features an almost unrecognizable Cary Grant here as well; I know him largely from North by Northwest, and when you see this young face start to talk, it's unmistakably Grant in a surreal sort of fashion. This movie is from an entirely different era, where jokes can't be snappy enough, and for only an hour of your time, it's worth a look.

Chris A (gb) wrote: Wasn't a big one at the box office but creative in it's plot nonetheless. Trying to resume his career was Rob Lowe, after his sex scandal. He did a great job as a psychotic drifter, and James Spader was good as a timid business man, semingly afraid of his own shadow. I think a different role for Spader because nowadays, he plays brash lawyer types with swagger.
