Dann M (de) wrote: A lackluster comedy, Are You Here delivers some laughs but doesn't have much of a plot. The story follows a weatherman who leaves the big city and goes to the countryside to help his best friend through the death of his father, but his friend's mental and emotional problems tests the limits of their friendship. Starring Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis, and Amy Poehler, the cast is pretty good; particularly with this type of comedy. The writing however, is rather weak and unfocused. Still, it tries to say some things about finding one's purpose, and appreciating what one has. Are You Here is entertaining at times, yet doesn't really work all that well.

It'll entertain kids, and adults will be able to tolerate it. It's a little hard not to get caught up in the overall warmth and sweetness, and in the end I actually found myself liking it. The performances and effects are TV level, which is to be expected, but the locations are lovely to look out and while simple the plot took enough interesting turns. I never found it funny, but the moments of dramatic tenderness were actually very appealing. It's a moderately successful modern Disney Channel Flick, and while it could be better, the product presented is still better than it has any need to be.
