What could have very easily turned into another Buddy cop film manages to maintain the audiences investment throughout, due to great performances from the leads and support cast alike.

(ag) wrote: Shortly after the 90's Rodney King riots in L.A., new school teacher Erin Gruwell (Hilary Swank) takes on the difficult freshman class of Wilson High School, made up of delinquents and underprivileged kids that the system has given up on. The ever-optimistic young teacher comes up with her own lessons & curriculum to try to get the kids to learn more about themselves and the world around them, having them document their lives in journals, while butting heads with fellow teachers and the school principal about her techniques. In the end, Hillary Swank as (Erin Gruwell) stood by what she believes in as a teacher and was able to help her students.Sadly, it's way too easy to be cynical about a movie that follows the "teachers can make a difference" formula we've seen so many times, especially when the first twenty minutes comes across like a remake of the Michelle Pfeiffer vehicle "Dangerous Minds." Once it gets past that, "Freedom Writers" quickly finds its own identity as a meaningful addition to the scholastic drama genre, partially due to the approach taken by director Richard LaGravenese in making it as much about the kids as it is about Hilary Swank's character Erin Gruwell.

(ca) wrote: Repetitive more than rascally, Meet the Mummy sadly captures the classic comedy team near the end of their long road toward breaking up. Funny enough, they re-ignited interest in the classic Universal monster franchises even while they were losing popularity and their own spark. Not only is their brand of humor going out of style at this point, but they show pretty much zero interest in performing their craft well. In this not-so-classic universal horror-comedy, Bud and Lou find themselves pursued by an Egyptian cult for a special medallion linked to a walking mummy. The story matters little. For these team-ups with the classic Universal monsters, they already did. The laughs and (now) dated thrills keeps you vestedat least, they should. Instead, this go-round just drags its foot. Throughout the film, the Mummy actually shows more energy than this once-great duo. He even gets the most laughs with a bandaged outfit that looks less convincing than those worn by most pint sized trick or treaters. Bottom line: Mummy Merest

(ca) wrote: for bunuel completists only. it really isnt very good. this is the only movie ive seen where the commentary guy explicity said 'this isnt very good...it would be forgotten if it didnt have bunuels name on it.' he even dismissed it. however, it is bunuel and his first feature film.
