Ken S (jp) wrote: Woody Allen comedy set in the 1920s about a writer-director (John Cusack) who believes himself to be a true artist and manages to get his play produced, only its by a mobster who demands that his talentless girlfriend gets cast. Along with her cones her bodyguard who actually turns out to be a better writer than Cusack's character. Cast in the lead is an aging Broadway star played perfectly by Dianne Wiest, who not only deserved the Oscar she got, but another one for the same part. She really nails it. I found this to be a real fun flick from the Allen body of work.

Nikolai E (de) wrote: It's not often you get a police procedural where the police don't have the moral authority, and it becomes a much more balanced struggle, somewhat akin, although decidedly inferior, to The Battle of Algiers. The use of language is innovative, but it only half works. Germans speak German, but Czecks speak English, specifically American English down to the cabbies with Brooklyn accents. This is clearly done to seamlessly ingratiate the Czecks with an American audience, but leaves almost no room to distinguish Czecks as a culture onto themselves. It's like you're watching some kind of parallel universe where continental drift deposited Czeckloslovakia off the coast of Connecticut. Fritz Lang's inventive editing, strong compositions and solid plot keep things brisk and entertaining even when the dialogue comes off as stiff. The concluding caper is extremely drawn out, and while it's never really off-putting, it's strange how it goes on and on when it could be easily summed up in a few quick scenes. A minor Lang film stands head and shoulders over the best work of a great many directors, so I consider it time well spent.
