Beshane B (au) wrote: How did this not win an Oscar. I need to know. This is the superhero movie for non-superhero type people.
Chris Z (ag) wrote: A little heavy-handed maybe, but beautifully filmed again as always with this director. Pensive, slow, the camera lingers a lot. It is a film-portrait more than anything. I love how Zhang Ke Jia's films feel more like documentaries than fiction, they are just simple and real snapshots that follow people's lives.
David S (jp) wrote: It's unchallenging and roughly drawn. The film noir sequences are funny, in that they throw in as many cheesy film noir cliches as they can. I don't think this movie is really intended to be very serious or hard-hitting. It was a little touching, and easy to watch, nothing more. The film asks the question: What would your life be like if it was a pulpy film noir caper? Certainly not brain candy - expect average actors, set design, cinematography, and dialogue.
Campbell K (nl) wrote: these three and half stars represent two single scenes in this entire movie; one being a scene where a woman's eyes are totally gimme-d by two cats and the other, a dude being ripped apart by two trees. fulci, you know how to deliver the thrills.

Adam S (kr) wrote: George Bancroft gives a tough, bullish, and sweet performance as a steam ship worker who saves the life of a suicidal flapper (Betty Compson), uses her, and comes to love her, all in one gloriously foggy and brilliantly lit night, in this, the last of the great Josef von Sternberg Paramount films of the silent era. Bancroft and Compson, using gestures and eyes to portray their growing love, cynical and guarded at first, tender as the night turns to day, make believers of even the most jaded anti-romantics, and on these studio-built docks, those are plenty and many, while Sternberg and lighting master Harold Rosson create a fog shrouded atmosphere that, entirely studio bound, perfectly matches the gritty, gorgeous, balletic movement of the characters and the camera. Some will suggest that the final five years of the silent era is undeniably the greatest era of visual cinema of all time, and these Sternberg films of the time certainly lend credence to that belief.

James C (it) wrote: Great movie. Great acting. Great script. Great director. Too lengthy.
Jake D (es) wrote: An incredibly stupid movie. The acting sucks, and the only god part is that one hot chick topless. A skip and than some.
Joseph S (fr) wrote: Christy Lemire has it on the nose, about corporate greed while ensconced by product placement. Moreover, the characters seem to act about 50% of the time that there's dinos on the loose. The other 50% is dedicated to staring at the sky in the open, drop-jaw marveling.
D B (mx) wrote: Spoilers. A different kind of movie. A tale of revenge, which some people may find distasteful. The movie is sad and disturbing in parts. But humorous and ultimately satisfying. A joy to watch all these top notch actors make this odd tale work. Winslet, Judy Davis, Weaving, and Hemsworth were exciting to watch in this. Good movie. Not to everyone's liking because of the subject matter. But it's still a good movie.
