Depicting the daily life of these women , forced to live together under the same roof and competing the favor of their master. The film is slow, very interestingly shot and filled with colors and symbols that gives a unique dimension to a film extremely well thought and executed. Gong Li is gorgeous and manages to portray her character with class, interiorizing most of her emotions that we will understand through her eyes and body language. It's film based on details and one must pay a lot of attention to fully understand what's going on. Raise the Red Lantern is one of these atmosphere films, calm on the surface but holding a storm of emotions on the inside and a vibrant study of the female condition in China prior to the cultural revolution.

(de) wrote: It's so cheesy and some would say "bad," but the movie isn't so bad. There is plenty of ridiculous wardrobe, the acting is questionable at times, and the characters can do some dumb things at times, but the movie has a lot going for it. The portrayal of summer camp is one of the most realistic depictions in any movie, especially in a horror slasher. The use of kid actors to play children is refreshing (something that was lost in the second and third). In fact, one of the big appeals of this movie is the children because it's so different for a slasher. The kills are pretty good and some stand out. The arrow in the neck is a very neat effect and some of the dead bodies are gruesome looking. Some deaths go a bit too far almost, but (while a bit tasteless) it doesn't ruin the movie. The movie is also known for having one of the best endings of any movie. It may seem tacked on at first, but it makes plenty of sense and it works. The movie carries a lot of themes about growing up, sexuality, bullying, body issues, and gender classes that only rise up and become even more apparent with each viewing. It's a very dumb movie, but it handles some fairly heavy material maturely and it isn't offensive. Something about it all just works. It's one of my favorite horror films ever and I have to give it a recommendation. It definitely has one of the best endings of any movie and it is unlike any other slasher you'll ever see.

(mx) wrote: Some of the visuals are beautiful, particularly a scene involving boats on a lake. I in no way expected this film to go in the direction it did. It's a very nice supernatural story and only when it ended did I realize how into it I was. It's a really wonderful Japanese film.
(au) wrote: This is a foreshadowing of his future work with Ed Wood. Bizarre storyline with unrealistic props gives this the Ed Wood feel. The acting isn't that bad actually-but the idea of trained killer bats makes this movie laughable. For the record, no bats were harmed in the making of this review
(br) wrote: This film perfectly fits action and comedy into the same movie, with scenes needing to be serious staying serious without jokes being shoved down the viewer's throats. This is personally my favorite film of all time. A+, well done, and I can't wait for sequel to come out later this year.

(es) wrote: Garfield is one of my all-time favorite cartoon characters. The fact that Garfield has his own movie is awesome, but this movie was weak.I will admit, I used to enjoy this movie. But now, I just think it is not funny, the CGI for Garfield is not interesting, and the story seemed poor. I would consider this to be a lackluster.
