Zack O (de) wrote: Oh so boring. No wonder nobody has heard about this film. There is not one single interesting scene. Skip this movie. Unless you like being bored.
Trent R (ca) wrote: Nice level of grit and sadism here, not so unusual post Wild Bunch - especially considering the cast. But the pairing of Reed and Bergen brings some chemistry over time and interesting scenes of remorseful anguish. Not over her rape, of course, but in relation to Reed's own men. The gunfight scenes are largely with early scoped rifles, so the typical focused pursuit has a different pitch when the action does arrive. Hackman is fantastic here, leveling his rage at one moment then feigning class pleasantries the next. Ortolani's score is typically excellent, as is Cecilio Paniagua's cinematography. This is probably under-appreciated due to the accumulation of odd choices in romantic pairing, emotionalism, and ranged combat - rather than delivering stoicism and showdowns.
Nik B (jp) wrote: I found this movie frustrating. Not my kind of comedy. The comedy of miscommunication. It's a farce about how the US military comes in to occupy an old Okinowa village. Teach it Democracy, Capitalism, English and American values. Then they fall all over themselves wondering how they could possibly have just been happy in their centuries old customs. There's a lot of counter-interpreting between natives and servicement and a lot of shouting when conepts get confused. The plot turns around when a career failure officer is appointed to a post. Instead of building a school, the town decides they'd rather have a teahouse. Which they fund by bootlegging potato brandy. Not quite what the upper brass had in mind. And now old fuddy-duddy generals are freaking out over the underachieving underling officer sees as happiness. The real deal-sealer in this movie though, is of course Marlon Brando, who plays - get this - an Okinowan villager chosen to be interpreter. Kowalski-san is pretty funny, given the best sage advice written for the film. Definitely odd, but amusing. And neither this nor the on-location Japanese set enough for me to get over the shrill squealing in every part that's supposed to be funny.
